That's the thing with Mullet, we all seem to need to smother it in Chilli/Ginger etc as it has a pretty bland taste. Stooped shooting Mullet for this reason alone ( + the fact they are practically tame)

I too stopped shooting mullet. I will admit to eating some which tasted as good as bass but i have had more which tasted too strong for me. It's a shame as they put up on hell of a fight but now i just let them go. I did see a big one out on the reef yesterday. I couldn't help but aim my gun and track him. Bless. He has no idea how lucky he was.

Been away for a few days,hoping to get in a bit this week.Anyone know how the viz is on the south coast right now?

Porthkerris claimed to have 10m off the beach yesterday but i would say no more than 6-8m offshore. Well worth spearing. Have fun.

Went in yesterday evening on the north coast with low vis 2-3m and churned up and didn't hold out much hope but it improved a little further out there were a lot more pollack and I finally got to see some bass, schoolies and a couple of larger ones none within range unfortunately but they were the first of the year after about ten cold dives. A lovely sight as i was starting to get a little disheartened and I left thoroughly cheered up.

Where abouts on the North coast did you get in? Ish?

I went out from Port Gaverne. It's normally fairly sheltered from any ground swell and parking isn't too bad at the moment. I'll pm you some more........

Headed down to the Falmouth area this evening for a quick look-see.Vis was just how i like it,a little murky but well doable and about 5m.Instantly noticed how fishy it felt with a lot more pollock around.Headed into the shallow string weed beds and pretty much instantly found a nice bass resting which provided an easy shot and my first bass of year!Had a cruise into the next bay and after a few more minutes nabbed another slightly smaller one.Stoked.Loads of dogfish about tonight and freed a lonely crab from some beached pots from the storms.So theres some much appreciated bass on the menu tomorrow night then!

Nice frame for those bass Badlander. I would like to replicate this weekend on my ice fins should there be any vis left. Little swell for a surf late Sat onwards I see..

That depends on where you are planning to surf. The swell direction is bad for the north coast and with a small swell anyway i doubt we will see too much of it. Spearflap and myself are taking the kayaks out sat morning to locate a few offshore reefs. Maybe a small surf sun if we are lucky but looking good for diving mon.

You know,i'm not sure if they taste nicer earlier in the year or it's just because i havn't had some nice fresh bass in a while but god that was delicious.

I had a long dive off Newquay today and did not see any bass. The vis was very good and nearly 10m in places. The usual seal off a particular headland was very inquisitive but eventually left me in peace. I went on to see massive shoals of baby pollock and sandeels . Quite a few wrasse, and spider crab too. I found 2 very nice edible crabs and they have been boiled up already for lunch tomorrow! I was dissapointed not to see any flatfish as I covered a hell of a lot of ground with worm casts. I may try the south coast tomorrow as its a bit cold and early yet clear up here.

Viz did look good yesterday. Took the kayak out to check some reefs but the wind was too much offshore. Mind you we did ok with mackerel.

Tomorrow is looking perfect for the south coast. Getting an early start to the same reef we dived in the august bank holiday last year when we got our bumper catch of bass. Will let you know how we get on.

Hey surfnspear, i guess you were out at the usual? You just gotta love that seal. There are another 2 younger ones this year too. They have been checking us out through out the winter while surfing. Cute but i can see them being a pain in the ass later on in the season.
