Had a dive on the south coast today.Winds were more SW than i'd hoped but got in there all the same.Viz was 3-4m to start out and there were no bass to be seen.Had to swim a fair way round but the further you went the more shelter you recieved and the better the vis got.Popped off my first shot at a 3-4lb bass that came in quickly and just said 'do me'.He got pretty stuffed in the kelp and as i was trying to get a hold on him i noticed about 4 or 5 bigger fish just watching the fuss.They soon buggered off though.Had to swim back through the increasing wind and tide which was a workout and saw one beauty bass that was slowly hugging the bottom through a pretty deep gully but he didn't stick about.

Managed to start getting in a bit at weekends recently. Drew blanks at Porthleven and Praa Sands a couple of weekends ago - saw a few small schoolies and missed a couple of half decent sized bass due to being a bit rusty, also saw my first Makerel too, although it was ripping past me at speed and did'nt get a chance for a shot!
Got in again on Saturday and managed to bag a good solid 6 pound bass at my usual haunt (very productive again this year!). Went in the same spot on Sunday and saw more good sized (4-8lb) fish hiding under the kelp but couldn't get a good view of them to shoot at. Also saw my first cuttlefish but didn't shoot it firstly because I wasn't sure how to deal with it, and secondly cos I wasn't sure whether it could be eaten, and how!!

Have a look and see what you think of the above post. I think rab may have got the wrong end of the stick and it is only the sale of speared fish which will be banned.
I hope rab got it wrong or i am off to stick my speargun where the sun doesn't shine. That will cause a ban!

The current legislation (article 31) bans the sale of fish caught using a projectile. The new legislation (article 12) which is to replace it would ban the use of projectiles for fishing, therefore effectively banning spearfishing. It would apply to recreational and commercial fishing

Everybody should reply to the DEFRA consultation (Tech.Conservation@defra.gsi.gov.uk ) pointing out very politely that the adoption of the legislation as it stands would ban a legitimate, selective and environmentally friendly form of fishing enjoyed by several thousand people in the UK. It is also well worth writing to your MP about this one. This really is potentially a very big deal.
I dont think the intention is to specifically ban spearfishing, it is more a tidying up of legislation, by people who are not aware that spearfishing even exists. It is vitally important to make your voice heard on this one

Bugger, i had a very brief flick thru the link but i was referring to what he wrote in his Post he started about the ban where he only mentioned " The sale, display or offer for sale of marine organisms caught using methods incorporating the use of any kind of projectile shall be prohibited. "
Looks like i should start sharpening my pencil and my speargun!

Why is it every time I plan a trip away it starts blowing a gale and chucking down buckets! :head
Plan was to take a mate snorkelling (I've been promising for ages!), hopefully to hook up with some seals. Plan was North Coast - Pendeen stretch.
In two minds if to call it off now. OR, re-think and just take my mate in for the joy of swimming above the weed, finding spiders and spotting some sealife. OR Is it all going to be a churning mess this weekend?

Thanks all, for the heads-up about the new EU proposals. I put together some words in an email to DEFRA pointing out the flawed logic for banning the use of recreational spearfishing and that it would discriminate against the very people these regulations are supposed to serve. An over-prescriptive catch-all could destroy this sport. But, then again we culd always follow the example of those on the continent and simply ignore any regulations which are inconvenient to our lifestyle/business.
Rant over!.... I was in on the North Coast yesterday and vis was moderate to very good (upto 10m). Me and my speargun had a great freediving day out. Schoolie pollack and bass everywhere - literally hundreds of pollack. But aside from the plentiful heavy weight wrasse I spotted nothing over 1-2lb. Perhaps the dodgy weather has something to do with it.

Just had a dive on the south coast in the falmouth area.Vis was 3-5m and a bit cloudy.2 hours of diving resulted in not one single bass or mullet being seen,and this at a spot that's usually a 'dead cert' or as close as one can get.As if this wasn't frustrating enough,i snapped my second ice fin blade.Tits.On the plus side,my mate did get a nice bass around the 3lb mark that was the only fish he saw after covering a lot more ground than me.
dived north coast yesterday good viz but again not much bass about at all, managed to bag 1 bass, only later to feel my gun jerked backwards looked around to see my float beeing dragged under,bloody seal took my fish and bit through my line:headeasy come easy go. but got my pb dive at 2 min16 secs ,quite pleased with that

, nice day anyway..Got in at Mounts bay before it blew up on Saturday and had a nice size bass and there were no seals about. On one dive a smallish bass came in quickly and spent a minute staring at me and then flicking to one side and then the other so quickly, effortlessly and with amazing dexterity. It was completely unfazed by me and was almosty showing off it moves. It was unforgettable and I felt honoured. Even better his big brother fried up a treat.
As far as this ban on projectiles thing isn't it the point that they don't mention spearfishing as such and as Dave has pointed out it is more ignorance or bad wording and probably refers to harpoons ? or something else ? and doesn't mean spearfishing which would be implicit if that's what they meant.

Got my mate in the water on the north coast nr. pendeen. Spent an hour with the seals. 5 in total, but 1 was super playful and my mate who the weekend was for even got his fins nipped. He was stoked (His first time in UK waters). It was nice to forget hunting.
Afterwards we collected a trio of Mullet, Bass and Wrasse to BBQ at the campsite and then drunk far too much red wine into the early hours!
Sunday north coast written off, but did get in on the south coast. Viz not so good, and a bit dissapointing after such a great previous day.

I think the main thing when talking to your MP is to keep things simple
Here is a link to the document on the EU website;

Take a copy, with article 12 highlighted to leave with him (or her)
Take a written summary of the points you want to make, also to leave with them
The points I would make are;
Spearfishing would be outlawed by article 12 as projectiles is normally interpreted to include spears
Spearfishing is a legitimate, selective and established form of recreational fishing enjoyed by thousands of people in the UK and supporting several business's.
Whatever the intention of the legislation, there is no logical reason to include projectiles of any kind with explosives, poisons etc in a list of destructive fishing practises; by their very nature, projectiles can only target single fish, and cause no bycatch or environmental damage.
Also tell them what you would like to see happen; I would suggest either the removal of projectile from the legislation (preferred option) or a legal clarification that projectile does not include the spears used for spearfishing

Dived the Lizard today.Not gone 30 yards out over the flat ground when i spotted a lobster below me.For once i had a net bag!Mooched around a bit,had a couple of large groups of mullet come in with a scattering of bass at the rear but none offered themselves up.Managed to miss a good sized pollock.It all got a bit quiet when the tide run died down a bit so i grabbed a spider to bolster up my bag and shot a lone mullet on the swim back.
Temperature felt good,viz was 5m at best with a lot less round the shallows.
