Fairly new to this game. After farting around with a useless toy speargun that I bought in Greece, I was hooked, and kitted out with a Venom 90cm and proper suit etc. After nearly breaking my nose discovering that big guns have a kick, I actually managed to catch a few pollack, had the time of my life, until my spear came detatched and disappeared into the kelp. That was 4-5 weeks ago, sice when I have been trying very hard (and politely!)to get the supplier to send me a replacement, but to no avail. Website info is contradictory, as in some areas it says the spear is 6.5mm, but in most areas it says 6.3mm (130cm.) Can anyone shed any light on this? I have sent an email today to RobAllen Spearguns.com, who supply "universal spaears." Is there anywhere else I can get a spear to fit this type of gun? I fish in the Looe / Downderry area. It would be great to meet up and pick up some tips. At least this stormy sea means I haven't been missing too much underwater time.

I wear similar gloves but i think they are supposed to be for gardening? They are hard wearing supple material on the back but have a hard yet flexible bright green coating on the front. I can grab anything with confidence without ripping my hands to shreds. I fish shallow water and fast current quite often so end up doing a superman impersonation by hanging on with one hand in a nook and the other out in front with the tide making me fly!!!! I love it and baby soft hands still after!!!!!!!!!!

googlyfloogy, it doesn't really matter if you put a 6.3mm or 6.5mm spear on your gun, i feel pretty confident in saying that as your fairly new to spearing you won't notice much of a difference if any to be honest. The most important thing is making sure the spear is the right length i.e 130cm.
I would also look at investing in a decent set of crimping pliers a few crimps and a spool of heavy monofilament. It will save you losing allot of spears and money in the long run, if you keep an eye on the state of the mono and change it as and when it starts to look tired.

I normally wear gloves, but only to keep warm! Not worried about Bass spins, I figure a nice sized Bass is due me a few spins in the hand as it has a spear though it! 
I forgot my gloves once, diving in Wales, caught a few nice Bass up to 10lbs, and my hands were shreded by the time I got out (I always grab them in the gills, and they are sharp without gloves on!) ... but like OM Dave I guess I must be a MAN as well (but not as old)

Got in down at a Falmouth area spot yesterday.Vis was pretty good,3-5 meters perhaps,much better than i'd have thought after the wind and rain.Not a lot around.Saw a mullet early on which i took and had to swim a fair way till i saw a bass in a gulley below me which shot out after seeing me.I dropped into the next gulley and slowly crept down it and he came back.3lb probably.But that was the onlt two fish i saw.
I think the falmouth area will manage some shelter during this week,and the weekend forecast looks good with lightish NW winds.

I see the swell has dropped for the weekend, anybody got any ideas whether the north or south coast will be best tomorrow (sat)? Not been in spearing in so long I want to make sure that I don't get in the water and find the vis is terrible! Is it me or has it been a very slow year so far? Weather been terrible. All this talk of spearing being banned, seems the weather has nearly wiped it out anyway!!!

Wind looks pretty much dead north over here right now.There's a 2ft ish little swell on the south right now too.Certainly hoping to get in at some point this weekend,sunday probably.If the winds stay light i'll be heading somewhere south of Falmouth area.Fingers crossed.
Got in today at a quiet bay on south coast, just south of mevagissey. Had a great dive trying out a new suit and weight belt set up. After all the rain and wind I thougt it best to stick to an east facing coast and well clear of any rivers. Vis was patchy close to shore but cleared further out. The inshore murk looked worse than it was. Once you get below the top 4-6 ft of water vis was much better. It certainly was very fishable (PM me if you need more details).
But as already mentioned by 'nickever' frustration reigns supreme. Plenty of fish but no easy targets - I saw 3 decent bass 3-5lb but no matter how i tried I could not get them to come within range. The same was also the case for the larger pollack. In the end I decided to come back in and hunt down some mullet, but again, no joy. Still, considering the recent weather it was a great dive.
I'll be out again on Monday so please post any weekend vis reports.

found some clear waters on the south coast. Not great but clear on the bottom. Mullet and after a lot of work a Bass from the weed.
Really keen seal met us this weekend! Not playful, but would come in and sit right next to you and stare you out!
I can#t remember hunting being this difficult in previous years!
Mullet in tinfoil with curry powder went down well saturday night prior to the wine and beer... falling asleep in my chair! Satisfying way to end the day.

Well done pav on the clear water. I was diving in pea soup this morning with spearflap. It was so bad i could hardly make out the end of my fins when looking down! Still managed a bass though. Saw quite a few more, including 2 big ones, but due to the low viz i could never line up a shot in time. The worse thing about it was as i was offshore i was diving on the edge of a pinnacle so sometimes i missed the reef which ment i was headed towards 25m +, so when i realsed i missed the top of the reef i had to abort the dive to try again. It felt quite unnerving at times. Lots of shadows!
The bad thing was it was ok the day before. The skipper of a near by dive boat told me it came in over night! Spearflap headed off as soon he saw how bad the viz was and found somewhere else which he said was good fun with good viz!

Got my new spear. Thanks for the advise Scottwilson and Janner. Bought crimps, crimping pliers and a line and got in the water at last on Saturday at Talland Bay. Visisbility was moderate, and it due to strong tide it was hard work getting out and in. Got myself 3 med-small pollack for my troubles. Made my new line far too long, so it was getting in the way. What's the best length? Will shorten it for next time.
