South coast Cornwall on Sat morning, beautiful conditions.
6 nice flounder (spread the love and gave 2 away), 3 big mullet missed at point blank as I am still coming out of hibernation!
Loads of bass but could not get near, or bring them in, they were all mostly 4-6lb which is a great sign but skittish as anything. Also, none in holes and it was a bit gutting working so hard only to see them freeswimming. Vis mostly out to about 8-10m, plankton backing off.

Good to see you’re still a bit handy Brett, we’ve booked a 4 night spear, surf and booze break down at the Lizard from Sept 15th so if we don’t see you before hope to catch up then some time over the 4 days?

Hi guys, does anyone know how much different my Mares instinct pro 75 gun will be if I put beauchat rubbers of a different size on it? My local shop Ocean sports in pentewan stocks these rubbers as they are a lot cheaper than Mares rubbers... but, The gun currently has 190mm x 19mm which apparently cost £40 whereas these beauchat ones come in either a 180mm x 16mm or a 220mm x 18mm.... I'm worried that the longer band or the smaller band will mean less power. Any ideas?...
Got in wed, thurs, fri last week, sheltered spots were great visability and very fishy at low tide... Monday night high tide viz getting worse... Cheers.

Not an answer to your question my echoing it, I also have a mares instinct pro 75 and this is the third season I have had these bands in, looked at replacing them last year but as a student was put off by the cost.
So will be interested in you find anything cheaper than works as well as the mares branded ones.

If you cant find any local shops, then any popular online shop will deliver what you want pretty quickly.
You can swap bands sizes around with varying results but far better to replace with the same dimensions - however the make wont make much difference.

in tonight, south coast, lots of plankton, 2 basking sharks....no mullet or bass. Saw some pollack and a garfish - thats all, vis was good under the plankton.

Also got in on the south coast, very similar report as crispin not great viz... had a 3lb bass (in the oven as i write...) which was all I saw apart from two small mullet in the surf on the way back in.
Not really looked around for new rubbers like that, just would have been handy to get them local.... Had a problem with the line release today aswell, it didn't seem to want to stay out... You had any trouble with yours Andycornish? the guns been great untill now... and any ideas how to take it apart? cheers

They are a spearos nightmare,after shooting a single fish you usually let the gun go while sorting the fish out. The gun is still loaded with the second spear and normaly pointing straight at you while your sorting the fish. The barrel is 38mm in diameter and with 2 spears plus rubbers not the best gun to track with. If you do shoot a fish and try to take a second out of the shoal while the first fish is still on it becomes very difficult with a fish still on thrashing around. When you do get 2 fish,one on each spear it becomes a tangled mass of shooting line and fish.

I've owned it since about 2003 or so I think, and I haven't really had nightmares with it - in standard form it wasn't so good, underpowered really - but I added bigger rubbers and a rail on the top, and now it's a lot better - I like it, and I'm not a band gun fan.

I'm not really interested in getting the "money shot" 2 fish on one dive - the whole point of this gun for me is that when you miss the bass with the first shot, and it comes back and looks you in the eye (which they inevitably do) that I can shoot it with the second shot. You can also use the secondary shot as a teaser to draw the fish in.

And if I do shoot the fish with the first shot - the second shot always gets discharged regardless - thats my rule anyway...Sorry but if you're stupid enough to leave the gun loaded with a secondary shot while pointing at you and you're tugging on it sorting your fish out then you deserve everything you get imo.

I've found that the lines don't really tangle too much atm, if I do happen to get two 6lb bass in one dive and the lines get a bit tangled, I'm sure I won't cry too much....

haha Tunny you're so right! i'll lob up some pics tomorrow mate - im still pimping it atm, but me and my mate got one each - pretty pleased with em so far - and when you compare 35 quid to 230 for the beuchat one - I think it's a steal!

feck - third edit - forgot to say - in tonight, almost north coast, no mullet again, no bass again, saw a wierd looking pipefish, and about 100 spider crabs - I think they're rutting or something - saw the biggest one ive ever seen I think - couldnt even stretch my hand across his shell - had about 3-4 cms over each side of my outstretched hand - thing was gargantuan - had not bag with me so picked him up and put him down again. lots of plankton again, not bad vis underneath - about 5-6m or so...

Got in down south coast on thursday on the boat.. vis was good offshore.. only saw one bass but he was a good size and lined himself up nicely for a perfect headshot. Awesome day out.. so stoked to take a really good sized bass on the first proper hunt of the year! Enjoy
