I'm presuming i know the spot you're refering to as it is also one of my favourite spots. I've found that using those gullies you saw can pay off there. swimming along them to protrude a good number of meters away is a good idea and not emerging for a while long enough to get those curious buggers close enough.Other times they'll seem to happily glide right in.
I agree with the above also about bass in the same stringweed spots...i've had a 5lb bass one day to return the following day at the same tide and get an 8lb'r in exactly the same little patch......those spots are best left unmurmered
