Well its been a while since Ive posted anything as I havent been able to dive much with my misses about to go into labour anytime.
But he finally arrived last weekend after a long wait in the labour ward weighing 8lb 5oz
As you can imagine I couldnt wait to get back in so I met up with googlyfloogly (Gareth) midweek and we went for a night dive, seen a few bass before lights out but I just couldnt seem to hit them, once the torches went on it got a bit more interesting with cuttlefish and red mullet dashing around on the sandbed and the odd topknot doing a very bad job of blending into the sand, in the end I managed to take a couple of decent sized red mullet and a cuttle fish and Gareth the same but the bass kept just outside the torch beam.
Anyway it was nice to get back into the water I just need a few silver bars now to fill my freezer as its completely empty.

well then 8.5 oz is your target you aint gonna catch it at night or you might!!! happy hunting and dont worry he/she will be ready to go out with you in 10/12 years then you might get that shiny one!!

Will be down your neck of the woods from Sunday for a week. Staying in my vw camper around the Lizard; Coverak to be precise.

I have the Assassin, feels strong and is good for despatching. I'f your using the knife for despatching and cutting your way out of danger I'd recommend it. I'd assume you'd be gutting and fillet the fish with a filleting knife though as one of my friends uses his dive knife to fillet and just makes a hash up.
Knife looks good and has a decent teflon coating. However like any knife you want to wash it after every dive, dry it and oil it up. Ive not had issues of rusting with mine and had it about 7 months now.
I oil my knife with the spray on frying oil if I'll be using the knife in the next few days, or if I'm leaving it for a week or longer I use a light coat of vaseline. For fear of the frying oil going rancid. Obviously clean any vaseline off before you go cutting a fish as you dont want to affect the flavour. but at least with using a frying oil, you know you are not going to be poisoning yourself, when you eat the fish.
That is just my method though. I'm not sure how others care for their knives but I've had no problems, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to add their 2 cents
Mister dave, You dont need to spend anywhere near that much on a knife. If using it for dispatching fish you would do better with a small thin blade in my opinion. Having a look around you can get some nice looking small knives for about 20 quid or even less, im sure ive seen a thread about knives on here so its worth searching for that. Sadly they wont look as bad ass as those two though haha.

Never used either of those - i've got one of these though - cheap as chips and one of the best fish dispatching knives ive ever had:

I saw you coming out of the water in your photo with your wrasse hanging off the end of your spear - have you got a stringer - if not I should get one of those as well - you can make one if you dont fancy spending money on one.
a stringer is the next thing on my shopping list too. However the pics I have seen of them appear to be a spike on a piece of wire.... could you explain to a Noob like myself exactly how they work? Do they attach to belt or what?

Personally I prefer to spend a bit more money and only have to buy something once. I personally use:
Underwater Kinetics Blue Tang Hydralloy Knife by Underwater Kinetics
It is a bit more on the expensive side but I have never put any oil or vasoline on it and after 3 years there is a tiny bit of rust where the blade meets the handle but otherwise rust free, and I also have not had to sharpen it. I do wash it with fresh water after but dont take it out of the case.
It is slightly on the larger side 5" blade but i like it has 2 cutting edges, with a serated edge on one side and a line cutter on the other.
With the stringer you thread the 'spike' though the gills and out of the mouth (feel free to add your own technique), i use a 'catch' bag as if I want to take crab, lobster (when I catch one) and general shellfish then I can.

Be careful when using stringers with sharp points. If attached to your belt and you lose the cover it hurts! If attached to your float then your float may not float for much longer!! I blunted mine off and use a knife for my fish instead.

I have the cheapest omer knife it aint rusted yet and idont see it doing cos its got a plastic handle and stainless steel blade. Plus it really kills stuff rofl!!
Vault Beach...... Terrible don't go there full of old nudies and no fish...... Hahaha well I went there quite a bit in the past and it has been full of mullet along the shoreline but didn't see any decent bass.... since then I've developed my technique, I've not been there due to the time involved getting down there...... Give me a shout if you want to try it, either way it has a massive reef and is one of the best snorkelling spots around here..... Si
