had a couple of hours in tonight, got my pb bass, knackered scales gave up on 8lb so he was just over 8lb mark,he was just lerking in the weed and didnt even notice me, good viz and fun dive..
ill think he might be a contender...
Nice catch. I'm so jealous of all you guys catching bass, I've only seen a few (3 or 4) in all of my dives.....let alone catch one! What sort of depth should I expect to see them...
Can anyone give me pointers as to what sort of ground I should be looking for so I can google map it, or even better, buddy up?
No worries, just passing on my experience on I have learnt a lot in the past 3 yrs so happy to try and return the favour. I had the black out when diving in Chepstow quarry and there you swim up and down a line (attached to the line by a lanyard) and have a buddy on all dives who meets you on the way up about 1/3 of the way (so 30m dive they meet you at 10m).
I do find the better I hide the closer the fish will come, saying that I have had bass and mullet swim past when lying in the middle of the sand behind some kelp. No idea of my weight but i have a 5mm wetsuit with 2mm shorts and top under and 8lb keeps me down at 5-6m nicely if i grab onto the base of some seaweed. With the weight you have plenty at the moment, dont forget the deeper you go the more negative you get. If you are neutral at 3m then you should have no problem staying at the bottom at 5m.
Weight belt wise, either invest in a rubber one, buy weight keepers to hold the weights in place or put the belt through one side of the weight, twist it 180 degrees and put it through the other side.
Did the 2* course and learnt a lot, cant recommend it enough can do them in cornwall now, you will learn that this can be quite easily not a cheap sport. There are many different computers and everyone seems to have a different favourite, mine is the suunto D4 it does everything I need and more. (scuba, nitrox, freediving and I can download my dives) Got mine from a 2thirds blue in falmouth new for £240 but I have seen them going used on ebay for £100, wait till the winter when no-one wants them can probably get them for cheaper. If you only want it for freediving the thing to look for is the sample rate.
Do like cuttlefish, watching how quick they change colour always amazes me, also night diving when you can hand catch them, and then put them on your mates torch (until it decides it dosent want to let go)

Hello,im new here,i live in Cornwall and have just got my first speargun,only been out once so far and saw loads of Bass,missed with my first ever shot but got a flat fish with my second,now im gathering up all the stuff i need,i got a pretty cheap speargun for starters its a somap 75 but seems to work fine,i will upgrade when and if i need to.
My first trip out was with a borrowed gun and we went out from the beach at Harlyn bay at Padstow,so im asking advice on where there are good locations in cornwall for beginners to practice safely etc,Thanx

Welcome to the forum weazelfish, if you're just starting out then there's buckets of info on here for you to read, i'm sure there are also people in your area who would be quite happy to show you the ropes as well - whereabouts are you?
Have a look at the minimum fish sizes to start with (if you dont know them already) Theres a DEFRA legal limit and a Recommended Retention Size Limit as well on that page.

the same thing happened to me, flat fish easy tho lol they sit there and dont move very often, i new aswell and only been a few times, guna go tonite tho after work, whats ure location?

Thats great,i was ready for every one to start laughing at the newbie and rolling around on the floor sayin not a somap 75.I live in a van ,based outside my x girlfriends door in pool,and my new girlfriend lives in Falmouth,but im all over cornwall a lot of the time as i play music for a living.where r u at.
I play in a band called Weazeldust, weazeldust | Free Music, Tour Dates, Photos, Videos ,and i also do solo stuff in pubs all over cornwall,i dont get up as far as Launceston coz of riseing fuel costs make it not viable,i did do Tintagel a few times a while back.i can live where ime playing so i can try all over for spearfishing,is tintagel good.Harlyn bay nr Padstow was good the other weekend,the only reason i didnt get some nice bass that day was because i wasnt shown how to reload the gun.at one point i was swimming around with an unloaded gun a couple of feet away from some pretty big bass. tomorrow im going to but some finns and gloves and bits in Falmouth,my drummer has just got a gun as well,we could all meet up somewhere soon for an outing,I know spearos in Harlyn so i can phone on the day and find out visability and conditions b4 we leave.

yeahh i was like that for a while then taught myself how to reload ect when u get hang of it it aint so bad! Yeah lol launceston is barely cornwall mite aswell be in devon, ive got fins and need to get some gloves really and a decent knife mines a small kitchen knife that a sharpened alot lol in a sheaf that i cable tie to me ankle or arm lol, just let me no when u wana organise sumin, i wana go down to looe one day, talland bay there is supposed to be good.Yeah that sounds decent

Any tips for finding bass around falmouthy way? only ever caught pollack around here. I'm also in portloe (veryan etc.) this weekend, so if anyone can suggest a better spot than kiberack cove i would be grateful. Me and a mate will be diving around falmouth a few days next week as well if anyone fancies some company, more the merrier and all.

I'm a novvie spearo, but I have caught bass in Falmouth bay. From what I have gleamed, bass like patches, and will move from patch to patch as the tide dictates. Sadly for us, to bump into lots of them you need to know their favourite spots or have some luck bumping into one. As a shore angler I have decent success with bass, and honest to god if I'm targeting them I will never put a bait more than 10 yards out. They love hunting in close, shorelines disturb food which attracts things that eat it, and things that eat them. My tip would be to get to know a spot, when the bass turn up during the tide, what time of day (first and last light are active feeding times for bass, first especially) what size tides etc. To be honest, you can't go wrong exploring nice rocky kelpy shores. Put in the time and you'll be rewarded.
That's just my 2 pence, tactics I have used myself which are beginning to pay off. It's easy to stumble upon a spot by word of mouth, but the learning and rewards come from discovering them yourself. That isn't to say 'oi mate nobody will tell you where to go' but rather, in my opinion anyway, picking a likely looking spot from a map (for example) and making it your own as it were, by 'cracking' it will teach you a lot about what fish want which can only be a good thing. Plus, it won't be busy or fished out!

Very sound advice, always more rewarding to find your own 'secret' spot, come Monday Il be free and on the hunt for new spots and hopefully a new bass pb. Although just bass would do me right now !
