Back in Exeter now, so long until next Summer cornish lads - its been fun.
Got to find some fish around exeter before winter descends upon us! any tips?

Looks like it was a good call to leave my spear kit at home, as have had some epic surfs this week. North coast pumping today! Had a look at the south coast kite surfers late afternoon (surfed out by then!) and then parked over at Praa to chill out. Not noticed it before but the swell was showing up an offshore reef towards the east end of the beach. Difficult to judge how far out this was (other than its too far to paddle!), but I guesse the locals know its position. Any one have any experience of it (surfing or spearing). The south coast swell wasn't massive, so I guesse its shallow from the waves breaking on it today. Could be a yak job next summer.

Yeah seen that before too.. been wanting to check that place out! Think its exposed on a spring low so far as I can remember so the peak of the reef must be pretty shallow.

Sounds like Welloe Rock out to the east of Praa. Been out there on a paddleboard and speared a few times. Its about 1km out and hard to line up on, loads of current and never had much luck out there!

Has there been any more trouble with the chav's throwing stones at spearo's around Falmouth now? I know one of the lifeguards from there and mentioned it to him. He said the police would be informed and they would keep an eye out.

Jesus, hard to say how i'd react in that situation. Not favourably would be my guess.

Night dived last night. Saw bass and a lobster as well as the usual critters. Viz was about 3m ish. Will pm you!

Thanks for the PM Tom. As it turned out i failed to escape from the house early enough and ended up getting involved in some DIY instead. Then ventured out looking for rabbits but no joy there either as the rain came in and we saw very few and missed all of those. Possibly might try again tomorrow.

Quick question to all night divers......
Can anyone tell me which is the best torch?, nothing too expensive but any tried and tested torches that will save me buying the wrong one.... and what do you do with it, was thinking about straping it to the end of the gun. Is that the best way to hunt and does it effect the balance of the gun much...? Many thanks

I use 2 different torches. The beaver plasma led torch Beaver Plasma LED Rechargable torch | Scuba Diving Torches / Dive Equipment | Deep Blue Dive which I paid £80 for secondhand. Its good and rechargeable so no need to buy batteries

and

an intova Intova Compact 4.7w LED Dive Torch - Watersports Warehouse which I use for checking in holes during the day as well as night diving.

I tried strapping the torch to the gun but you can only see what you pointing the gun at. It made looking around quickly impossible as well as searching thru thick kelp. Best for me is to have the gun in my right hand and torch in the left with a lanyard Just dont blind yourself when you equalize

The Princeton tec torches seem to have a very good reputation and are very well made.

If you are after something cheaper, some of the chinese torches from deal extreme are cheap, and powerful. However some do leak, seems to be a bit of a gamble, but I suppose you get what you pay for!

I've got a princeton tec shockwave, and a 900lumen (supposedly) p7 torch from deal extreme. Both have their pros and cons. I find the princeton tec to be quite heavy, especially compared to the brighter and cheaper p7. Although there is a dodgy connection in the p7, looks like water has got into it at some point, despite always cleaning and lubing the o rings.

You probably won't want to put a torch on your gun, you'll end up with a very sore arm! You'll want it in your hand so you are free to move and scan around you with it.

Be careful, night diving can get very addictive!

I have a P-T Shockwave LED. Its OK, a bit bulky, and I have had two torches leak, so not too confident in it. The batteries seem to go on forever though.

I now use one of these: Light Monkey 9W LED Handheld [Light Monkey 9w handheld] - £300.00 : Deep Ideas Ltd, Online Shop. It's small, amazingly bright, rechargabe and hasn't let in a drop of water.

Or you could try one of these: Tek-tite LS5 Excursion.
Tektite - LED Flashlights, LED Replacement Bulbs, Dive Lights, IR, Strobes, Marker Lights, UV, CSI, LZ kits, & Tekna Knives and lites. Totally bomb-proof, bright and long battery life. A lot of deep tech divers use them for their emergency backup torches, so says a lot really. £115 each, so not very expensive. I would have one of these over a PT Shockwave any day.

I would go for the Tek-tite, and get some decent rechargables.
Rob Lumb sells them here. LUMB BROS Tektite Range Of Torches And Strobe's.

Get the Excursion model that uses "D" cells for the longer burn time.
