Getting some better fish this year. 7lb Bass best so far this year so PB is in reach It's unusual for me to see more Bass than Mullet.

I am in need of a cressi spear for the 75cm. My spears tend to last ok, bit this is the 2nd snap using my 75. What spear options are there? I have to go cheap and accept the breakages or get a stronger option. Does 6.5mm make any difference compared to the 6mm? They have both snapped where the pivot for the flopper is. Although I can use the 90 for now would appreciate a quick replacement if anyone knows who stocks and can post quickly.

Pav, try apnea jersey - they have good stocks and post quickly usually.
why are your spears snapping - are you shooting rocks?
Edit: maybe you could use a threaded shaft with separate spearhead? might be cheaper if you think you might break more?

Yep, the 75cm does take more rock hits than my other guns. I like to hunt with it in the bolder gardens.

Night dived tonight to see my 40th bday in with a buddy. We were treated to bioluminescence, .. Only the second time I have seen it, and the first time whilst spearing. No Bass today but did get a sole (only my 2nd ever) and a lobster. It was pretty busy in there tonight with the dog fish out in numbers.

Seemed like a really big tide tonight.

Hi All, new to the forum. We dabbled last year and this year have gone and bought lots more kit. Looking forward to learning the art, picking up tips on here and hunting out secluded spots.
Although at the moment were heading out from easy and safe places in West Cornwall where were based.

Morning all I'm just starting out (no gun yet)and looking for a bit of advice on locations. I'm not expecting anyone to reveal there favourite marks. Just some general advice. I live on the North Coast in Porthtowan and have seen a few fishy looking places while out in the kayak between Porthtowan and Godrevy.

But as I'm new should I start on the South coast in more sheltered spots? Or are the North coast marks worth fishing?

Sundays foray into the north coast larder with a mate went well. Still a serious lack of good silver though.

We've got a few bass and mullet down south but very little of a size. Got a feeling the netters are taking more than their share.

Somethings definitely amiss with the numbers...and I cant quite get my head around it besides perhaps increased pressures (been ongoing for years) on spawning grounds or even perhaps migratory stocks being hammered in the Med.

Nice catch surfnspear! I've seen a few small bass on the dives I've done so far but nothing of any size. I went in at Godrevy on Saturday after a surf and the vis was pretty crappy probably due to the swell on Friday.

Its far more exposed so the finer cover like stringweed/wireweed that you find fish in and around on the south coast does not get much of a hold. Its normally kelp, sand and deeper clearer dives. The south coast I will often drive to as it is just far more fishy a shore dive spot when time is limited...

Night Dive - unusual!

Been getting into my night dives. Solo. Have had Bass, Sole and Lobsters during the good viz (which has now changed).

I chanced it tonight. Viz was just about worthwhile, but swell was picking up. Went in at my normal spot and did the normal patch. I then headed into a new area as the viz was fustrating me. The swell was building so I decided to call it a night, and headed back to a sandy patch which would allow me a safer exit. A lamp had been set up so figured it was better to come in over the reef to gve the fisherman his space as would be likely fishing over the sandy area.

Misjudged the swell and gullie and ended up getting a thump from the reef. I managed my way out over the reef and had the help of the lamp being used as a spot to light up the reef in front of me until I had my feet on firm ground and started to sort my gear. I then walked over to where the lamp had been set up to say thanks but it was gone.

I lit the area up with my dive torch, walked up to the path and lit up the whole area but no one was about! No sign of anyone. Any fisherman would not have been able to pack down and clear out that quickly.

It was an odd walk back along the path to the car! Whatever it was it avoided me more hassle on the reef.

Anyway besides that took my wetsuit off for it to rip (I must have torn it on the reef and it opened up when I took it off). It's a fairly large rip (about 15cm). What is the best way to repair a spearo type wetsuit? I was thinking patch on the outside glued and stitched? It's getting on a bit now, but cannot replace it this season so must mend!

-When you glue it with Black witch, glue both edges with some overlap and allow to dry fully but not joined.
-Thereafter using gaffer tape bring the edges together and lay a new glue join to as much of tear as possible and allow to dry.
-Turn inside out and do other side to finish the job.

Had a good day out on the boat with GoingtotheCoast yesterday. We had a good haul of fish, and had also seen a few sunfish on the surface doing their thing, flapping about a bit. We were passing one of my oldest marks on the way back, so I persuaded the skipper to give me ten minutes to check it out, and I got in just 5m from the shoreline. First drop, decent Bass - missed it. It's friends came back and one was soon speared and knifed. I shouted to the skipper to bring the boat over. As he was coming I saw - looking above the surface but with mask still on - a sudden splash and a grey thing flap about. "It's another Sunfish" I shouted to skipper. "No, it's a shark" he replied. He must have misheard me. "It's a sunfish" I shouted again. "No, it's a shark" he shouted back, big grin on his face. I realised what he meant this time. It wasn't a sunfish, it was a shark. "Well bring the bloody boat over and pick me up". Skipper will make a joke or two about my speedy return to boat and boarding of. We motored after the shark as it's fin was still at surface, but didn't get a really good luck at it before it dived.
Skipper thought it was a porbeagle or thresher. Looking at them on internet, I'm going for porbeagle. Wikipedia says they rarely if ever attach humans. This one had it's chance, it obviously picked up the smell of bass blood and came to have a look. As it didn't have a nibble, I could take comfort from the experience, however I think there may be a little bit of residual unease that might need a few dives to work its way through. My favourite mark will never quite feel the same though.
