Cornwall 2013

Hi all

My aims for 2013? Catch my first fish! And the more spiders the better.

Have been out about six times since christmas and seen two tiny wrasse and one decent fish that I thought was a bass. I couldn't be sure as she was tucked in the weed, head poking out and I was far too busy having a flap wrestling with the safety catch on my gun. Ran out of puff, surfaced, returned, no fish!

Looking forward to hearing how everyone else gets on.

Lesson learned here - never use the safety catch on your gun. I never ever use mine as I once missed a shot on a lovely big bass (at least 8lb) because the bloody safety was on :duh. If you are ever in a situation where you feel you need to use the safety (on a boat, getting out of the sea, stringing a fish, etc.) it is always safer to unload the gun as no safety catch is 100% reliable.

There are lots of fish out there - be stealthy, be patient, and you will soon be stringing them up left right and centre :D

Cheers Tom

Yes, I had to have a laugh at myself afterwards and I'll not be doing it again!

Having hit a bit of an all time worst weight at Christmas, coupled with feeling horribly unfit I have been prompted into action to get active even in this grim weather.

I'd be interested in meeting up for a few cycling sessions sj, last year me and a few friends regularly cycled the camel trail but the temptation to have a pint in Padstow was hard to resist :)

Came across a big clump of goose barnacles walking today (N devon). Strange looking thing. Not sure if these grow locally or have been washed up from the south?

There could be a small stash of them growing somewhere around there Pav, I doubt anyone would say if they are growing over here as they are worth a small fortune.

.

I'm pretty sure the cycling is improving my fitness, and hopefully it will show in the water. If nothing else I'm more confident of getting into my wetsuit.

Not sure where you're based. I'm on the edge of Goss Moor which gives me a neat 10 mile loop taking in the Goss Moor Trail. I also do the Camel Trail from time to time. The new blue trail at Cardinham is also good fun if you want something a bit more challenging. I cycle most days after work if I can, but try to reserve most Tuesdays and Thursdays to cycle with the wife. Weekends I try to fit around family life.

I'll pm you some contact details.

My trigger finger is starting to itch so it must be getting on for the initial recce for the season! Vis looks like its just workable too up 'ere.
I expect Jim will hit the ground running this season after a solid bit of spearing over in NZ up to now.
Good luck all for the season.
:wave

Next weekend looks like it might be pretty calm.

Hopefully that my fitness efforts translate to better hunting when I get in the water. Shooting is just starting to come to life.

My winter ale arm is going to help my gun grip for sure...and there the fitness story ends!:D
No better cure for diving fitness than diving...:)

Had I stayed in winter trim the blubber may have helped me stay warm, were it not for it preventing me getting into my suit.

Well I can quite happily report that the ocean is devoid of life.:ycard

Viz from 0-2m in places, water temp ok for 1 1/2 hrs.

Only fish seen was a launce that I disturbed from the sand.

Next time I go, it'll be at another mark, for flatties.

Nothing ventured...............

Hi boys I'm in the middle of booking a cottage for September in Porthallow am I barking up the wrong tree for spearing or am I in the thick of it ?any of you live that way ?

I don't live that far down but it's an area thats worth exploring.
Should be plenty of life. Will it be just shore dives or are you taking a sit on or boat?

It will be shore dives with float or dive hunter(reef) set up depending on tides and shelter it looks like it has loads of options down and around that way.And the sea will be at it warmest then I hope !

Popped in today for just an hour or so. Viz not as good as i had hoped for but do-able. Very little about but managed to bag a fat flounder and failed to coax a sizable lobbie out of his hole.
