Nice one Pav
Great report, wish my mate would share his catch with me but having said that I probably wouldn’t give him anything either.
Paul.

Yo Podge,
If i would share my catch with you then neither of use would have much dinner! Probably amount to a peice of scampi each, especially after my lack of filleting proess!:t

Back home now! , and hopefully these waters may clear next week.

2nd day was unable to meet of with my buddy. Went out on the north coast for a couple of dives. I found a great bed of string weed. Only 2 seals in the cove! , and both sleeping today. I watched one for a while , he was like a fishing float! , sinking to the bottom and back up again.

I then hunted in the string weed bed for a while , which the 2nd seal had chosen to sleep on the edge of! I had assumed the seal would have spooked the fish but he actually marked a hot spot!

Some great thunder / lightning storms whilst we were visting. Also Basking sharks seen from the cliffs.

P9 of today's Sunday Times, there is a big picture of said Rick Stein holding up 2 monster lobsters under the heading:
"Tourists tell Britain: you're a rip-off"!
The article includes price comparisons with Germany & USA. Also with Padstow, Cornwall; Naples, Florida (home of JimDoeToYou?); Gerona, Spain. UK prices are worse, much worse in most cases (assuming you are paying rather than receiving end).

The article concludes that we just got complacent about being gouged (rather than being due to high house prices, income, standard of living, immigration...they didn't even mention our extraordinarily high taxes). Reassuring?!

saw that too mr x.

Another great dive today at a place that i have often fancied hunting but had never actually tried out...

Went with PeteyH and he took home a lovely golden mullet and a nice pollack!

Over the sandflats, i saw a small schooley bass heading towards me; i kept my eyes open to see if any larger bass were accompanying him, and all of a sudden i was surrounded by 35+ bass all of which were about 2-3lbs, ( not the greatest of sizes admitably) which proceeded to circle me! It was almost overwhelming, and was a strange but amazing feeling to see that number of fish at one time. I eventually came to my senses and shot one of the larger members of the shoal .

Once again i came across a few red mullet :t and took a shot at one. once again the shot hit true and hard, yet the fish ripped off i have never had this problem with any other type of fish. Just wondering if anyone else has had any similar experiences? Any tips on shot placement? or are these fish just exceptionally fragile?

Still keeping my eyes open for triggerfish and cuttlefish - to no avail?!?!? anyone had any recently?

Huw

Hi Huw you are getting some good mixed catches & experience's. I have never seen a red mullet but my mates who night dive spear them regularly at this time of year. They do have soft body's perhaps you need to get down to thier level & shoot them in the head. Considering you have seen several red mullet in the day time I must assume there will be hundreds out at night. Perhaps you should have a go at night diving? Your friend was lucky to spear a GG (golden grey) how big was it? what did he think of the taste?

Red mullet are very strong for their size, and also very soft, go for the headshot if you can. The current spear record is 1.23kg, i think it was shot 3 times as it kept tearing off!
I dived a new spot in the far west on Saturday. Several bass up to 8.5lb, and a Gilthead bream of just over 4lb. Really pleased with the bream as i have been after one for the last few years. I was lying on the bottom with a school of bass all around me, just about to pull the trigger on an 8lber, when I saw 2 bream in the school. After another minute (by which time I had turned purple!) they finally came into range and I shot the larger one with my mamba 90

cheers

Congrats on the gilthead bream! Saw the F word the other day, looks like you had a laugh and Mr O'Callaghan looks well. Did Ramsay really spear the bass or did you give him some of yours???

Nice fish. Wondered if I might have seen a bream but those pointed sidefins now make me think not.
How do like the C-ski with console vs. the RIB?

Just checked out the long range weather forecast, it's not looking good :

A colleague at work asked if I saw the F-word (no I f'in didn't).

Excellent catch Dave. That Gilthead will get the juices flowing over here. A few spearo's (especially Ed) are keen to catch one.

Spaniard try this [ame="http://forums.deeperblue.net/showthread.php?t=67284"]F word[/ame]

Hi Foxfish,

Thanks for the tips on night diving. I really would like to try it, however am unsure on torches etc, and where to mount them, so maybe i shall have to leave that till next year and just persist in hunting them during the light hours. However i think that the tip with getting down to their level and shooting them in the head is a great idea and shall try it next time. Also thinking about what dave said about the record being shot 3 times makes me think that perhaps attempting a shot from above down into the brain may be one of the only ways to stop them wriggling and tearing off the spear?!?

As for the GG, it was a really nice fish of about 3lbs ( have pictures and will try to get them up along with the others that i keep promising, within the next week), it was really stunning fish and was crusing around with a shoal of normal thicklipped greys. A great shot in the gills, pretty much stoned the fish first time, so the meat was completely undamaged.

We are eating it for lunch in about 45mins, so will let you know how it tastes later on tonight.

Cheers dave for your tips too. Also a great bream, i am very enveous! Although you should check out the size of the one in the fowey aquarium... i would love to come across him in the big blue! Would you be able to give me some brief details of the suit that you are wearing in the photo please, since i think that it is very similar to the one that i am lookign at purchasing from you... what thickness it is etc.

Thanks alot guys,
happy hunting!

Huw.

Fantastic Dave, you beat me to it regards the Gilt head but they are being caught over here real close to the shore by rod fishermen! I would definitely like to spear one, any info on how it behaved when you saw it or any more details at all?

O by the way Huw hope you enjoyed eating a potential British record, Golden Grey mullet stands at 1.029kg ( Steve W a forum member has one of 2lb 6oz in his freezer so it is quite possible)

rofl Classic! Oh well, as long as it tasted good.

:head So your telling me that Huw and I just ate a record fish for lunch!

Weighed it in at just a touch over 3lbs 2oz! Nevermind! Tasted lovely I'll be keeping an eye out for them again, since I'll be heading out most of this week. I'll hopefully upload some pictures in the next few days!

Does anyone know where can I find a list of records for UK fish caught by spearos, and more importantly how can I submit a record if this happens again?!

Also, has anyone seen any triggerfish or cuttlefish around recently? I've been keeping a lookout for them along with Huw, but nothings appeared yet.

Well Done Dave! I Saw a Red Bream myself today at the same location as the GG, but unfortunately was a bit on the small side - so I left it for another day!

Happy Hunting!
Pete.

list of BSA records http://www.underwaterfishing.co.uk/records/National Fish Records.htm
Some of these are out of date though (eg Gilthead is now over 3kg, and I am pretty sure the goldspot and thinlip mullet records are also now bigger)
I think you need to be a BSA member to claim a record, but then it is well worth being a BSA member anyway, if only for the insurance and the magazine
Are you sure it was a goldspot, rather than a thicklip with a gold area on its sides? Here is a guide to identifying mullet http://www.jerseyspearfishing.com/articles/articles_mullet_identification.asp

cheers

Across the boarder! .. N Devon.

Viz is workable today. Not great but 6ft ish in places. Checked out a spot with a buddy that I had not dived before. Didn't see a single Bass, although it looked like it had a lot of potential.

I'm mostly amused by my buddies consistent failure to bring all his kit! Usually our spots are at the bottom of a long and STEEP hill scramble. The last 3 trips we have left in the car ...

1. Mask rofl
2. Knife :rcard
3. 1 Flipper rofl rofl rofl ..... that hill was steep!! rofl

Tempted to head back west to hassle the Seals for a few Bass! As my local dives are usually solo its good to be diving with a buddy :t

Naiad, I hate to say it, but you were right (typical woman!). There are still a few days to go before it will make a difference to me though. Fingers crossed and pray for bass (Pastor!).

roflI used to know somebody like that. We once arrived at Lawrencefield in the Peak District and he assured me he had this time brought everything. We proceeded to gear up when finally the penny dropped -- no harness!:head And...it was 150 miles away. After he had a short panic attack, I dug around for slings to rig up one of those scary home made harnesses c. 1920! (Luckily for him, I had a spare old harness in my sack -- most unusual).

My own personal weakness: dropping my glove (always the right hand one).:duh So now I usually keep them on, unless "camped out" on the beach. It's pretty easy to forget the knife too, although I have always remembered just in time so far.
