Glad you liked it:). I was trying to think of things that I would like to know or that might save others some time. Seems like dive-time is a limited commodity for all of us, what with tide, weather, fish, family & making a living.

BTW I saw surprised to see another spearo operating every day I was down there (although twice it was the same guy); although strangely never while I was spearing. Were any of you operating down there? I saw a young guy in combat trousers & red T-shirt, a grey haired gent from Dorset (told him about DeeperBlue.net), a couple of guys in their 30s/40s.

Hi Mr X,

Me and podge got in at porthallow when we were down there over the summer. Nice looking spot, plenty of mullet about and a solitary bass. There was a load of string weed to the right of the beach where we saw all the fish. There were gulleys and patches of kelp in around 5-10 metres of water out to the right of the beach. Saw a nice lobster in a hole but couldnt tempt him out with my tasty looking finger waving. While we were in the water two blokes stood on the beach and watched us for about an hour. They didnt seem too friendly when podge got out and spoke to them. Not sure why but it put us on edge. There were a couple of crabbing boats running out of there so maybe they though we were nicking all their crabs and lobsters. Little did they know of my utter incompetence at getting lobsters out! Which leads me to a question, does anybody have any good ideas/techniques?

Jim

There are lots of techniques most of them useless. There are even more people who will tell you how to do it but who probably have never caught a lobster in their life.

I've caught a few and this works for me - sometimes - but I don't claim it's the definitive answer.

Method 1
1)Take your spear out of the gun
2) Gently thread to one side of lobster and touch rear
3) He should turn, allowing you to grab tail
4) Move hand quickly to rear of head section and hold tight.

Method 2.
1) Normally lobsters have an exit to rear. Check for chimney or similar
2) Again, remove spear, and tap in front of lobster, encoraging him to back up.
3) Leave spear lodged in front and he will reverse, grap tail when he emerges.

They kick very hard and do nip, so grab tight. If you grab a pincer, it will simply come off.
Never use a torch or shoot as forbidden.

As OMD says, there is no magical way to get lobsters out of holes. Tail tapping often works, as does finger waggling (occasionaly) or even simply putting the gun in the hole and shaking it about! It all depends on the hole and the lobster. I find the most important factor is being quick and decisive. The more you fanny about the more likely the lobster is to just retreat right back into its hole and refuse to play anymore.
As regards the locals at porthallow, the fishermen there think the only reason anyone goes diving is to steal their crabs and lobsters (and in their view that includes ones that may go in their pots in the future:head ) As a fisheries officer once said to me "they dont get out much down there, socially or genetically!"

it is illegal to spear lobsters (or any shellfish), but there is nothing to stop you using a torch in the UK (I think torches are illegal for spearfishing in France though)

Thanks for that Dave makes me fell a bit better as for the two guys in question I did my best to be polite and engage them in conversation although it was no good.
I guess some people are just born ignorant.

You could be right Dave, France is seriously 'no go' where illumination is concerned and when I questioned my fellow spearos they were sure torches were banned pretty much throughout Europe.

Sounds a bit odd, seeing as many Euro Spearo companies make torches. Does it give some great advantage (I mean except when it dark - obviously)?

Jim,
There was a sign up in the toilets at Porthaustok offering a reward for information on the animal rights activist/anachists that had been opening & damaging lobster pots in the area. It seems likely that they would be scuba divers (a lot of folk would not differeniate between a tank equipped scuba diver & a breath-holding spearos). Folk may be on the look out for Sabs. Didn't Podge tell you what they said? Scuba divers have been known to take from pots too :naughty (somebody posted on this on the Devon 2006 thread a couple of weeks ago) -- which is really asking for trouble.

SurfNSpear seems to catch a lot of lobsters. I think he uses his hand(s)...and no doubt guile & cunning;). I have yet to see a lobster in the water (caught plenty of freshwater crays tho') - heard some suspicious clicking on one dive -- which I have heard attributed to crays (& pos bass :D). I tried trapping lobster a couple of times out while out spearing but just got bleenys & little crabs so far.

Many European fishermen (Spain, France , Italy) favour grouper as a target species. Grouper are generally cave-dwelling sedentary fish and therefore torches are required to light up potential lairs. Other species can be 'lit up' this way too even if it is during daylight hours. In Spain it is illegal to spearfish at night with heavy penalties if you are caught.

thanks for the ideas guys, hopefully in this weekend so maybe tempt one out of its hole.

Mr X, the blokes in question just wanted to know what we were doig and what we have caught but it wasnt a friendly question. I was still in the water at the time - trying to get a lobster out - so maybe it was best that he stayed there!

I have fished around the area for years, and the (boat)fishermen are usually pretty cool. Theres a few dicks who have tried running me over before.
My favourite way of winding them up this year is fishing from my kayak and catching strings of mackeral off Porthkerris, in full view of fishermen who have paid to fish off rocks and are catching nothing. Haha

Yeh... the north coast has cleared! Viz about 2m :)

but where are all the fish? 1 Bass spotted (too small to take).
If the Bass don't play tomorrow its tickling time for the Lobsters on the low tide :t

Hi Loveboater, do you dive from your kayak on the N. side of Porthoustock bay (Batty's Point-Pencra Head)? I was out spearing around 9.30pm one evening, about 10 days ago) and saw somebody on a kayak as I was swimming out; I think they might have been just getting back on their yak, after diving. They paddled off north, towards Porthkerris, before I reached them.

Pav, tickling lobsters? Beats massaging a mullet I suppose:D.

Looks like the viz has started to clear my way too, however just as it has began to do so, a strong wind has started to pick up! Its a pity really, as i would have loved to got in this evening as the tide was huge! Apparently it will reach the same height sometime in October, for the last time for 25years (although i still remain sceptical about this myself). It would be interesting to hear if anyone else has any info on tonights tide? My local high street was flooded at 7.30pmish, but the water was meant to be higher over on the north coast. Anyone seen anything spectacular eg. shot a bass in the town square?

Huw

Got in on the dropping tide. Bit dissapointed by the Viz. 2ft?..
Collected a lobster and an edible Crab (who was particuarly stubbon to leave its hole!). Had found a 2nd Crab but he was impossible to move.

Had found a nice hole which surely was hiding a good size lobster or crab. No sign so I baited the entrance to see if i could tempt anything closer to the front of the hole. Surface and waited for a moment and dived. As i went down I noticed a 2nd good size hole above the one I had baited so I stopped. The viz was about 1ft so I grabbed the rock and pulled my head towards the hole, at the same time as the resident Conger stuck his head out. We both reacted in the same way and I backed off as he backed off also into his hole.

I surfaced and couldn't bring myself to dive back to the 1st hole!

Fingers crossed the Viz improves. Feels like a 2nd summer. :)
