Hey tankers,

My first post on 'your' forum ;).

I'm locked and loaded for my first trip to Cozumel (December). I tried to do a bit of research on CZM freediving, but all I could find was loads and loads of Scuba info. So, I figured I'd put it to the Scuba folks.....

Could any of y'all give me advice on dive shops, reefs, hotspots, shoredive locations, etc. I'd like to make some arrangements in advance, but I'm weary of laying down the plastic. I don't plan to spearfish, but I would like the opportunity to try lobster hunting.

Thanks,
Ted

I don't know much, but....

I believe the north side of the island may be your best bet for either freediving or spearfishing. However, if you can get someone to take you out to "Islas de Mujeres" there are some nice reefs with fish in the area and with the proper escort you can do some serious diving and spearfishing. My dad and I landed a 28# grouper in the late 80s.

Also looking for advice on cozumel.....

Is August a good time of year to go? It seems hot and steamy, but hey, if you're underwater, no problem right?

Thanks

Cozumel

Dove Cozumel first week in August... was hot and steamy... with HUGE current and only fair visibility... especially compared to last week (first week November). Cozumel is all about drift diving... jump in, go with current and boat picks you up after 30-50 minutes.

In August, stayed at Occidental Allegro all-inclusive resort... about 30 minutes from town (and so pretty steep cab ride). BUT... they have an excellent dive operation (Dive Palencar) on site, with nice boat dock. Distance from town made up because closer to reefs... so five/ten minute boat trips the norm. Even come back to dock for surface intervals, making for really nice relaxed atmosphere.

Just came back from staying at Occidental Allegro in Playa del Carmen (30 minutes south from Cancun, on main land across from Cozumel island. ) Similar set-up, but accomodations nicer. Dive operation on site called Barracuda -- not as good as Palencar... small boats, no dock, sketchy rental equipment. But - in addition to some local dives on the Playa reefs - they set us up for a day in Cozumel with Blue Angel Diving. We took ferry in morning, Blue Angel's boat was at ferry dock. Very accomodating operation... they changed tanks for us and fed us LUNCH. Took 30 minutes more to get to same dive sites as from Dive Palencar, but if you are staying in town, this could be a good bet.

In Cozumel... favorite dives were Santa Rosa Wall (80-90 feet); Paradise (45-50 feet); Palencar Gardens (80-90 feet)

Also... if have time, make arrangements to dive the Cenotes (caverns) on the mainland. A real different experience. These are fresh-water caverns... crystal clear and cold... We dove at Dos Oros... an especially nice site because there is a well-developed path to the cavern opening and good platform to get into/out of water. Some places, you need a machete to find opening... and dragging equipment is a pain.

went diving in mexico last christmas.

cozumel is very nice but the waters are a bit on the strong side, they tend to race through the gap between cozumel and the main land so be warned.

Stay away from the aquaworld people they only want you for your money :rcard and dont really seam to care if you have a bad dive.

the people that i did go with were Dive cancun in the city very good much better got to see some very nice reefs.

cozumel its self has a lot on the west cost side plenty of hotels and places to eat but watch out for the hire buggys they are driven by :ban on there hols and they have no idear what they are doing!!!!!!!!
