When I was younger and pushing my self "snorkeling" I was unaware of the dangers of things such as SWB. I now hesitate to dive alone. I may end up doing a little freediving with snorkelers of moderate experience as my spotters, but that got me thinking about inventions that might make it safer. Please don't flame me if these ideas are idiotic, but I just thought I would start the discussion and see if anyone else out there has had quirky ideas.
One would be a silicone skirt that actually comes from the bottom of the mask over your mouth and around under your chin. It could be easily remove, but the effect would be to keep the mouth held shut and keep water out in the event of a blackout.
Another idea was for a self inflating divice that is triggered some how by loss of consciousness. It's hard to come up with a trigger that doesn't impede. A hand held trigger would work, but would make for inefficient swimming.
Have any of these kind of things been tought of and dismissed? Remember I directing this towards the recreational diver with out a squad of safety divers in place.
