What is a good way to mark a dive line by length or segmented lengths in a way that would not interfere with a lanyard or require knots? This would save a bit of hassle pulling 6' arm lengths off the reel and adding to mark a depth. Is there a way this is generally done?

I have a white and yellow lines and I used a Indelible marker and put markers every 10 feet for me. Ten feet one line twenty feet two lines and so on and so on up to 50ft that way I know how deep I’m at for spearfishing with a float.
