I'm a very novice diver and am looking to purchase a free-diving watch/computer for my boyfriend as a gift. He's quite experienced (max depth 33meters) Any thoughts about the SUUNTO D6 or Mosquito? The D9 and Stinger are a bit out of my price range:ban . Any other brands or ideas? Thanks

The D6/D9/Stinger & Mares Nemo are quite reliable, but the D3 and Mosquito are notoriously unreliable. I have a box of dead D3's and I've heard that as many as 40% fail within the first few months.

Isn't the Stinger cheaper than the D6? So why is it out of your price range?

Look, there's nothing even remotely comparable to the F1.

The only reason everybody doesn't have one is the cash flow problem. This is easily solved.

Eric: cut a deal with any one of the billion companies that finance leases. Offer the F1 on a leased basis. You get the full cash price up front, from the leasing company. They take the monthly payments from the customer.

People: As soon as Eric does the above, IMMEDIATELY LEASE F1's. There will be no excuse.

I have a D3 and so do many of my friends, and I am not aware of any failures. Its a dedicated freedive watch without any other features that you don't need, and I'm totally dependant on mine.

Hi,
I wouldn't go for a D6 because it doesn't have a freedive mode!
My Mosquito is great and has worked well for about a year now. However, if your boyfriend doesn't scuba dive, I'd go for a D3.
Cheers,
Ed

Until I can afford Eric's computer, I'll keep using my 2000 model Mares Apneist. It works fine, and has very large display characters easily read by the elderly.

Paul,

At your impressive age, your looking at centimiters of improvement(if there is any) Your Mares Apneist don't give you this.

I guess it's time to use your retirement annuity or longterm pension insurance to buy a new computer.

have a wonderful day

Does that mean I can finally take that Apneist off my wrist now ? It ruins the lines of my Armani suit sleeve - although it's a great conversation-starter at the bar. Chicks love it.

Paul,

The chicks at the bar are looking for a totaly different "centimeters of improvement" than you do. Soo yes, leave the Apneist home.

Bill, when I'm wearing that Apneist, I can truthfully say that mine is bigger than that of any other freediver.

I'm happy with my D3....simple enough for the "technologically challenged" to figure out (most of the time...), and it leaves a nice tan mark!

Thank you everyone for your helpful advice. Eric, from what I know about the Titanium Stinger it retails for $1500. I'll look into the D3 (I think he may have had that one at one time and either lost it or who knows) and the Apniest (although I'll have to warn him about the chick swarming problem at the bars. Thanks for the tip on the D6 not having a freedive mode, had no idea.

The F1 is superb. If you can swing it get one of these - it is the ultimate freediving unit. I've been waiting outside of bars with a sockful of sand collecting money for mine.

The F1 has no rival and no peer. It's far and away the best.

Eric ? Leasing ? Financing ?

The market calls. Will you heed the call ?

i had a 2000 Mares Apneist, who served me faithfully for many years, until last year it went to depth guage heaven..

Bill im impressed you managed to wear yours on land, i couldnt wear mine out of the water...too heavy rofl (unless it was a pool bar you were talking about????)

Still i miss the big lump:inlove ....was clear and easy to read...sigh....But then it didnt have a surface interval timer!!!:inlove

I'll third that - those things were a blast to use - the learning curve was completely transparent and you could see the read out with just a glance. The amber color made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I have a D3, which has been replaced at least once by the factory already. I also have a stinger- but not the titanium model which is too overpriced for me.

Since I cannot afford a F1 i use my D3 most of the time, but have my Stinger with me for back up if the other one dies. The surface interval timer is nicer on the D3 than the Stinger, but the Stinger has been a much more faithful work horse for me. If your boyfriend scuba dives the Stinger will have more features for him to use.
