they say that the neopren strap floats. Is it true? Well I think it is true for the strap but, can it give the D3 enough floatation?

Good question, and one that I never thought about.

I just dropped mine in a bucket of fresh water, and I'm afraid that it sunk.

Neoprene strap is the way forward IMHO.... and as for post dive, i take a sealable tupperware or old mask box and fill it with fresh water and leave my D3 to soak on the way home from the sea...(which unfortunately is 2.5 hrs worth of soaking!)...:(

The D3 with a neoprene strap still sinks in most saltwater....not sure about the dead sea though :)

2) Does chlorine damage the computer? Does anyone use it in the pool?
Chlorine doesn't damage computer but drive one crazy. After such situation you should restart computer by removing battery. Wash computer's sensors every time after diving.

As owner of the D9 I don't recommend to buy it for freediving only :rcard

I use my D3 in the pool all the time (just last night, in fact!). I just carefully rinse it off in the shower when I'm done. :D Something weird happened last night, though..

I was practicing entries, and had done 7, so my day history was showing 7 dives. On the 8th dive, I dove down to the bottom of the deep end, then swam all the way to the shallow end, and surfaced...where my D3 then showed a total of 11 dives! So, back to the deep end, a few more entries, and I was up to 15 dives. Then, I swam a 50m dynamic.....and came up showing 20 dives! I'm beginning to think that horizontal swims confuse the HELL out of the D3!

Today I got my D3's strap exchanged to the rubber strap Todd mentioned before. It looks cool and I like it, now I can wear the thing as a normal watch as well.
And they even did it for free in the store.

Glad you like the strap, Sander! My D3 did the weird thing again last night; after 10 dives to the bottom of the 12' deep pool, with the computer showing 10 dives, I swam a 50m dynamic with fins.....and came up to find it reading 16 dives. lol

Did you swim close to the surface? If not, then I'd definitely write to Suunto even if your D3 is already out of the warranty. They often release new BIOS versions, and a simple upgrade may fix the problem if you have an outdated version. You'll need the data cable though.

Any dive computer will be confused by a dynamic close to the surface. The F1 has a hysteresis algorithm to try to avoid confusion in that situation, but it still isn't foolproof.

Barbara....I mean Snorkels:head , I would imagine that I...uh I mean your boyfriend, would go with the D3. I...damnit...HE doesn't scuba dive, isn't a competitive freediver, and rarely breaks the 100' barrier...plus the D3 leaves a little cash available for a Cobra 120 or one of the new C4 guns...

I appreciate all of the info that you guys have passed along, unfortunately I believe my discovery of Snorkel's identity is going to cost me a new freedive computer. I was on our laptop the other day and came across Deeperblue in the history bar and seeing that it has been awhile since I logged on it struck me as odd. The first post I look at is this one and began to put the pieces together. My dumba$$ said something about it and now...well now I'm getting a pet rock for christmas. Regardless of my screw-up I really appreciate all of the time everyone took to help her out, once she cooled down from my "ruining the perfect xmas surprise" she was very complimentary of you guys...I'm sure meeting some of you in person would probably take care of that notion, but I digress.:D

Thanks again and I am looking forward to recieving my new pendulum diving partner the "Pet Rock"

I am currently contemplating a Cressi EDY over the D3, as it is also a dive computer, but has freedive mode and is downloable to a PC. the shop I go to, uses it for diving every day over the last 5 months with no complaints.
and they freedive/spearfish with it as well. So I am hopefull that it will be a wise choice over the D3. it came down in price recently at a local stockist, and I want one before they are gone at 399.00.

I know this is an extremely old thread, oh well.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get an analogue watch with depth gauge (or altimeter) and chronograph? and one that looks good of course? Am I kidding myself that i'm going to find something like that ever?

Thanks

Well, there's always the Timex divemaster and promaster series, but as to "looks good" that of course is an entirely different matter. :)

Also, swatch sells their very basic diving thingies for cheap. - Might find something there...

I was looking for the same thing a while ago, but opted for something else instead. Try some of the citizen dive watches. Ive never used them, but I'm sure someone here can give you an opinion on them (good or bad).
Here are a couple of the analogue ones

I used to have one, but its not very useful for freediving. When you descend, it starts timing the dive. When you surface, it stops. But then when you descend again, it continues timing from where it left off, considering it all one scuba dive. You have to do the math in your head to get the duration of all but the first dive.

It does show you your depth and the temperature, but it doesn't do surface interval, and that is one of the best things about my D3.
