DNF in 25m VS 50m pools

Hi there!
I'm trying to improve my performance in DNF. Practicing now a days in 25m pool. It's ease to figure out for this kind of distance that more neckweight means less arm strokes per pool (doing 2,5-2 strokes now). The question is, until what weight value this statement is true (using 4kg on the neck). Does it work in 50m pools?

My hesitation is provoked by following thoughts ...
With more distance to swim between the kicks from the walls one needs to make more strokes in the water. Increasing neckweight in the water you'll need to bring more impulse with each arm stroke and kick in liquid viscous medium, though they are not as effective as kicks from the wall with long long glides.

Any opinion would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Sergey, I'm am not a good pool apneist, but do train DNF more often in a 50M pool.
I can get about 15 to 20% further with the same dive effort in a 25M pool. The biggest difference I see between the two (other than less walls to push of from of course) is depth, a 50M pool is nearly always deeper than a 25M one, and it is easier to hold a constant height in the water, that means less buoyancy change. My actual PB (very low) is in a 50M pool. Its nice to know that I can go further if I ever actually decide to in a 25m one..

Azapa, You can still beat Your PB in this 50m pool. Ever tried swimming sideways?:) It should be around 12meters wide and I love it - no armstrokes, push off and glide only, that's how I set mine DNF PB
 
Dave says it all but it's fun to get into theory. After you have zeroed your buoyancy, the only efficient way to increase mass is with more lead and neoprene. This will decrease your the affect of the strokes in two ways. One by restriction and the other by requiring you to accelerate the increased mass with each stroke after slowing in the glide. The more strokes, the bigger the penalty.

That was the point of my question. Does somebody find the limit of the neckweight when the need to accelerate the bigger mass feels like penalty? My guess is that this effect should be detectable in longer pools (50m may be).

I’m training in a 6m depth pool. So there are more variables to play with (beyond the neoprene). The buoyancy can be also altered by the immersion depth and by packing degree. So there is some range of lead weight I can take down. . It’s about 3 kg when swimming near the bottom with no packing or 5-6 kg gliding at the surface fully packed (all with the same suit obviously).

Less strokes do not always relate to more efficient swimming.
More neck weight help to have more glide and less "stop and acceleration". Than there is the trade of of doing more weak strokes; versus doing a few strong ones, both done in the most efficient way. For myself, I can do the - 25m lane in one stroke thing, but for max distance I find this not the most efficient way. For competitions I use ~ 3 strokes, aiming for a stable and comfortable speed.
I think the sport is still in much development and people are also individually different and consequently it's up to you to test and find out for your self what works best for you -at the moment- and why.

I agree :)

It is true that pushing off wall is far superior. I am new to freediving but come from a competitive swim background, and each turn gives you about 4m extra (unweighted!) for no effort.

But this also depends on speed of swimming and the type of stroke, and how good your technique is. For DNF there is definitely massive advantage 25m rather than 50m, because you aren't swimming fast enough to build momentum that can carry you over long distances, where you keep the speed you build with minimal effort. Put in another way, you don't 'stop' and turn at the wall. You don't lose any speed, as it's not there to start with. So the wall is a bonus few meters.

For DYN, the amount of effort and time required to turn and push off, depending on how fast you are swimming, could be more than letting your momentum take you along - you put in just a little bit to keep moving. And how well you are able to build/keep momentum (speed) without putting in effort is technique.

Hope that isn't more confusing!
