Dorset Spear Fishing 2011

Me and Ricky had a day out yesterday exploring a few offshore marks - well we found 3m viz further out from Portland but less than 1m 17m down in the harbour. Ricky had a very nice 3.5lb Bass from a shoal and I had a couple of small Plaice of 1lb and 2lb.

Boy it cut up rough later on as the tide turned and the westlerly turned south and picked up to 20mph - got dangerous so plodded back in surfing on the too big waves - probably 3-4m high - quite a ride...

Oh and had a large clawless crab - not sure how a large edible loses both its claws - I assumed a diver had taken them but s'pose it could have been some other predator - seems unlikely to me. Don't understand why people do that must take ages for them to grow back - must make holding a knife and fork very tricky.

hi guys i got in over the east side last night and was pleasantly supprised with a good 5m viz. Was a fun dive with a mix bag of wildlife. Lots of spider crab , good size pollock huge wrass and a sole . I only got out with a pollock 3.5lb happy about that! my buddy told me he saw some bass but missed. Not my best turn out but was a very pleasant dive . One i will be making again wen weather is as shocking as it is. Cheers for the info barny .Catch u for a hunt wen u get back.

Guys great news. I have figured out how to spend £180 for nothing. Ok here goes
1. Decide to dive at Newtons Cove
2. Park at the pay and display parking
3. Get kitted up and don't forget to pay for that parking.
4. Place your parking ticket on your window.
5. Enjoy your dive.

Now repeat this easy 5 step process 3 times.

Now times the £60 parking fine 3 times

Amazing. Please all be warned. I really have no idea how this happened as I always throw my old tickets away and by the time the first ticket came through I had parked all three times.

IT REALLY TAKES THE MICK!! that is so stupid, it would be slightly more reasonable if it was the multistorey car park but this is outrageous. just goes to show how hostile this place is becomming in the build up to the dreaded olimpics

Short story for today.
Dropped down to meet The High Sheriff of Portland Almostafish, fell in the sea at 8.30 had a fantastic dive seeing Brown Crab, spider crab, mullet, the biggest sea horse that I’ve ever seen, wrasse, oyster’s and scallops but not a single flat fish.
With the lack of flat fish we only took the sum total of 1 scallop which was eaten while we got changed.
Really nice dive though took a quick 2 and a bit hours to do the circuit with pretty good vis considering the weather we’ve had.
Nice coffee and a chat after and on we way home just after mid day.
Here’s hoping for next week fellas.

I too wur about at that time, but the mist made it tad difficult to see very far, you saw more than me but I won on the shells!!

I saw a large seahorse while I was working in Poole the other week. Really graceful creatures and seem very confident in their camouflage as it didnt move at all while I photographed it.

Hey guys. Went out today for my second ever session. Came back with my first ever bass, was only 2lbs but ate very well. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it, surprised I didn't mess up the shot in my excitement.

Not at all sir, it was 7 kicks of the finns left from the largest rock on the top end of the sand patch in a small bit of weed around 600 yards from the last boat on the right side of the ramp.

You must have been on the other side and on the left of us, twas a tad on the misty side for a while. I'm keeping my shell allocation for the winter and it seems like i'll be doing the same with the flat fish as well.:head:head

Council traffic warden or Police = Pay!
Private land/supermarket/hospital/etc. = Keep letters but completely IGNORE! IGNORE! IGNORE!

Hi, everyone!
Nice visibility is back!
Me and Konrad got into the water at 10pm from LC. Sailed by small inflatable to Durdle Door Beach. No fish seen but vis was 10+ meters. Moved to Manowar Cove - I missed 1 bass and nothing more seen. Vis the same. Went back to LC, water was about 5 -6 meters visibility in the middle of the bay. Lots of bait fish and we finished with one sole and 2 shells at 3am. Where is the Fish? Have they moved to warmer waters? Solent or Christchurch Bay?

will be able to tell you soon about Christchurch as I cracked the gear out of the loft and apart from a few new rubbers off the back of the flippers and the gun (actually where do I get replacement gun rubbers any pointers ? ) am good to go for a bit of a snorkle.. thinking surf reef might be my 1st port of call or at the end of HHead

Haven't posted in a while, or been in for ages...

Managed a dive with the 'old man' on Saturday got in at NC and turned left for a change, was a really nice dive vis was only 2-3m at best and the water felt positively warm. Only saw 2 bass always out of range and very skittish. Saw one other fish a Mullet of 2-3lb which I nailed through its head from an oblique angle - always a pleasing shot! Didn't weigh it, gutted it at the sea because we were parked a good walk away.

Dad came away empty handed unfortunately.

Was great to get back in again after a month absence!
