Dorset Spear Fishing 2011

Thing is Dave I guesse I am old school but I was fishing from an early age, I live in a fishing community & have worked on all types of fishing boat.
Not once have I heard a fisherman shout out "Angleshark" !!!!!
Look at any British record list & you will find Angler fish & monkfish listed as excepted names but half the population get them mixed up!!!
Anyhow - Lee that must of been a very exciting sight to see.

I personally only know a monkfish as a monkfish (if that makes sense..! i.e the one myself and Lee saw) Angelshark is used in many other countries and covers all species of Squatina that is why the uk goverment have taken this as the common name when used in a consevation context.

Coffee and catch up with podge and jim today, smashing stuff. A walk along the east side of the island and there was milky vis close in. thought it could be useful if anyone is planning a dive tomorow.

Back in UK and Poole Harbour seems quiet but not a bad week. Four and a half pound mullet numerous bass and a nice ling.

Twas good to catch up with Ben and to meet the family.
Had a weekend down at Portland as we’d had the B+B booked and paid for because of the pairs comp and BBQ which got cancelled.:head
Had a good look around on Saturday and ended up having a swim around Newtons and Nothe Fort, well is was more like being blown around than swim around. Jim saw one small Bass and a silver eel and after a couple of hours of being slapped by the waves enough was enough.
After the coffee and cake catch up with Ben we tried to have one out on a few lures down by the Ferry Bridge but again failed.
Nice curry in the The Island Balti and it was off to the Cove Inn for a swift half.:friday:friday Many many swift half’s and a few swift shorts later we found the B+B and that was that.
Sunday was a lovely day, the wind had dropped and so had the swell, after a couple of coffee stops we ended up at The Bill, Jim had a walk along past the cranes and I fell asleep in the car, hour and a half later and after Jim had watched a Seal hunt its way right along the cliffs we both bottled out and drove home.
Spent the rest of Sunday with a fuzzy head on the sofa at home.
Sat at work now with the sun shining and just a little breeze, hope it holds out till Sunday.
Well done to those that had a few over the weekend, and that is a Congery looking Ling mate.

Mate; there's small and then there is small........ how wide is a beuchat mundial fin any way..??? Because that bass on the bottom is not much longer than the fin is wide...........! what is the MLS for bass in Dorset anyway? is it still 36cm? (genuine question)

I believe it's 40cm in Dorset. I was practising in the quay where it's 'harry blackers' with my pole spear.
I'm not proud of the fact that said fish was 34cm so I'm no doubt opening myself to a world of criticism.

Being good has nothing to do with it - just be a little more selective.

I don't want to preach but if a Fisheries Officer had caught you, you could have ended up with at best a severe bollocking and at worst a big fine. I was told last week that it could be as much as £2,000 per fish, I'm sure someone more informed than me could shed more light on the matter.

Thanks for the information Broseidon. The pole is a Puig. Bit of a handful in low viz. The gun is a Totem Pelagos,no use in low viz.
