Flippin nora, cracking work ricky! Fishing off the bill is reserved for the hardcore few and clearly it pays off! Congratulations man, fish of a lifetime for these waters...
Cheers guys it was more luck. I wanted a black bream I knew they were out there but the chances of me getting one would be slim! Gary (hes not on this forum) also got a 17lb cod he's one of those hardcore spearos that bens talking about! I found the smaller cod in a gullie a bit deeper

Purchased a large 2/3 person kayak yesterday! put on the wetty grabbed the spear etc... and headed out to the North entrance (portland harbour).
Met the harbour master!!!!!! I was just practicing my not so good diving at depth skills WITHOUT the spear. Good job I left the spear in the yak as I believe you are not allowed to spearfish within 150 meters of the breakwaters???? can anyone confirm?
Anyhow how had a good chat with him and he seemed a good guy,,,even though I hadn't paid my harbour fees for the kayak! he even gave me a half price season ticket.
Maybe he didn't see my spear in the yak????? anyone know what the deal is with spearing within the harbour?
If anyone want a trip out spearing off the yak, then give me a shout. with these westerlies due, I'm maybe looking at paddling out off the closed entrance and tuck in against the rock out of the wind (harbour master said it was fine to use the closed lane as long as I kept out of the restricted area around castle town).
I'm based near shepton mallet just off the A37 also have a flat on portland for weekend use.

Top Tip: If you find a nice crab and want to bring it home, but have no net - just tie one claw onto the float line close to the float using clove hitch - brilliant - from Terry Thomas - 30 minutes after he told me I had found a crab tied in on and it worked -- just be careful when pulling in your float at the end of the dive!!
Went down to my favourite local spot last night only to find the WSW wind had chopped the sea up and reduced the viz to 0m. So I got the paraglider out and had a little fly along the cliffs there and spotted that there was a small area on the East side of a breakwater which had a bit of shelter from the wind. I landed and quickly got changed and got in the sea and was happy to find myself confronted with 3-4m viz and shoals of bass! I took one bass for dinner and missed a large mullet, grr. Still, it's always nice to find a new spot, particularly one that is sheltered from WSW winds!
Another bonus was that I saw more species of fish last night than I've ever seen in one dive before (and in such a small area too). To name a few: pollack, whiting, plaice, mullet, bass, wrasse, mackerel, silver eel, and even a trout.

Does anybody know anything about the pairs comp tomorrow? Is it back on? The weather is, annoyingly, looking pretty similar to last week.

Dr Willi and I raced to the coast this afternoon to beat the wind. All was not 3 bad as we headed out. Checked out a couple of reef areas and we saw a fair few bass. The tide was running and sea was growing so we were one in and one out of the boat. Really enjoyable stuff with vis up to around 7 metres. We both came hme with a bass each, nothing big though mainly due to a combination of missing or spooking the better fish. We got in around 5pm and the sea was quite rough by this time. Well worth the effort, just a shame the weather has canned the comp this weekend. Good luck if any of you are braving it...
Matt and i are gonna give it a go tomorrow night somewhere in your neck of the woods if you're keen.....it'll be matts first night spear......he's bought a torch and everything!:martial
oooh, I fancy a night dive. Haven't bought a torch yet though. Any recommendations for a torch for the occasional night dive? Bear in mind that I'm on a very tight budget at the mo.
