Dorset Spear Fishing 2011

Hi all

I am new to the forum, started spearing this year. I have a day off tomorrow and was looking to come down from Berks and wondered whether any one could give me an update on conditions for between Swanage and Weymouth. I dont want to have a long journey to find poor vis and rough seas. Grateful for any help, thank you.

I haven't seen the water in the last couple of days mate, but my guess is that it wouldn't have improved much from the weekend, when it was fairly brown and I was out surfing in that area (the wind has picked up a bit today, which wouldn't have helped either).

If it was me I wouldn't make the trip down from Berks, but then it all depends on how desperate you are to get in.

Having said that, the wind is predicted to get a lot worse after tomorrow so, if you really, really need to get in, I wouldn't leave it any later than tomorrow, because it is likely to become completely unworkable after that.

Try Swanage Bay - yesterday vis was about 5-6m or Studland Bay - on Monday vis off the Old Harry's Rocks was about 6-7m while rising tide. On ebbing tide decreased to 3m. But not a lot of fish seen. Only some decent Pollacks and small Bass.

Saw more Mullet then you could shake, well, a spear at today. Couldn't be bothered to take any though. Got a couple Pollock and left it at that.... vis was yyyuuuukkkk! And the boat trip back to the harbour was more than a little lumpy! LOL

Did see one of our new visitors to our shore's in the shape of a small Tuna, it came past like a small missile!

Thanks to all about the information about the vis. I went in at Durdle Door and although the vis wasnt great and I missed a mullet I had a great time. Look forward to my next day off and hope the weather is OK. The info every one has given me has been most helpful.

For those of us without boats, has anybody ever approached a dive charter like the Ruby J at West Bay? West Bay Fishing Charters & Trips on board the Ruby J I wonder if they would take a spearo or two along with one of their dive trips. Might give them a call...

It was nothing that exiting, I teach and partake in mixed martial arts, and somebody axe kicked me in the head ripping my ear from my skull! you should have seen the face on my missus when I came home with it hanging off. I just got out some yellow electrical tape and strapped it back to my head, but she won in the end and made me go to the hospital.
