Dorset Spear Fishing 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Thanks. I was thinking of using a mini anchor if I fish a pier again, or I can just tie it to one of the posts.

I probably now won't bother fishing tomorrow.

Took the dog down to Lulworth Cove this morning and not the speargun. Glad I did as there was a strong breeze blowing into the cove and the vis look slightly better than Boscombe yesterday.

I've been thinking of having a look around this area. Do you usually dive in the cove itself or do you go outside of it?

I have only just started spearfishing. However I have kayak fished this area many times heading either east or west from the cove. I've had more success outside the cove.

There is a good stringweed bed on the left hand side of the cove that usually has a few mullet hanging around it or if your luck a bass. Im talking summer time tho, not sure if it would of died back yet, if you head west out of the cove towards stair hole there is a sewage outlet there somewhere so I have been told. That would prob explain the numerous ear infections I had a few summers ago when diving that area.

Good to know about sewage outlet... It will attract mullets... But I am not sure if I would like to eat them... Haha

Not sure I'm allowed to do this, but....

I've signed up to a new social community where people can share videos, news articles, equipment reviews and anything else they want. For example you could have medicinal news mixed with freediving news and spearfishing videos.

Just thought I'd share as the more people who use it the better it will be. I've already uploaded some articles from here and a few of my favourite YouTube/Vimeo videos.

Thanks Moomin and Kuya. Don't particularly like the sound of the sewage outlet, I must say! Is it worth trekking over to Durdle Door?

The bay to the east of Durdle door is usually quite productive, its just the walk back thats the killer!

Tell Jordan that he needs to add "overflow-x: hidden;" to his body id #CategoriesBarPage to fix the horizontal scroll issue ;)

I imagine walking up those steps with a weightbelt and all my kit would be a bit of a mission! I'm happy enough to take the walk, though; it'll help me get warmed up before getting in. No doubt, there's still a parking charge this time of year?

Im not sure about the parking charge out of season, the walk back up will certianly warm you up! when you thinking of heading down?

2 hours: £3
4 hours: £4
6 hours: £5
Over 6 hours: £7.50

Tickets are valid for both Durdle Door and Lulworth car parks - if the conditions are not good at one location you can always try the other without paying again.

The Lulworth Estate

If you want free parking at Durdle Door and are up for an even harder walk there is a free parking alongside the grass verge on the main road before the holiday park (you need to go through the holiday park to access the Durdle Door car park). Personally I would park in the car park.

If you want free parking at Lulworth Cove, at this time of year there is free parking on the single yellow lines opposite the tourism center near the carpark which puts you slightly closer to the cove. That's where I parked yesterday morning. There are limited spaces here, about 5, so best arrive early.

There i was hoping to get in for a dive in portland harbour tomorrow night until i saw the wind is getting up to 30kts tomorrow morning! What a pain!

Will probably (definately) end up looking still but i must admit the last time i went out searching bays in the dark with my fingers and toes crossed i ended up returning home an hour later soaked in my own sweat and not a drop of seawater.

Oh well back to Weymouth in a week for Christmas to try again. I will at least get to see how the adjustments to my SMB were successful.

Lots of great information there. Fortunately for my wallet, the sea's not warm enough for me to need a whole day's worth of parking! I probably won't go down until one weekend in January. I have so far enjoyed my dives off Portland but I want to go further along and I've been wanting to get in at Lulworth since taking my girlfriend there last year.

...and there I was yesterday, looking at the forecast for today, put off by the unsettled weather on its way. Turns out it was mostly ok today. The wind speed was a lot lighter than predicted and it was still coming from a northerly direction. If I had more experience I would have tried a mark in the shallows of Poole Harbour tonight - there was a rising tide at dusk and the wind speed at the moment is only 7mph.

Some of our Dorset marks are not that accessible and require a bit of yomp to get to them - with a Guardian/Dive Hunter type float and kilos of lead it may make it a bit harder. Worbarrow Bay and Seacombe are two examples.

I'm thinking about trying something like this:

I've seen a scuba diving couple who were shore diving at Seacombe use something similar to get their kit their down.

The trolley can be hidden or locked to a nearby post.

It won't be suitable for every mark.

Has anyone considered or tried anything like this?

Not seen them, but looks an ok idea, ok as its good to get a whole lot of gear down. But most people I see just mod their own floats by adding some sort of shoulder straps, harness. This probably wouldn't be too clever at Durdle door due to the steps at the bottom, unless you consider that a small price to pay & carry whatever you have to the bottom, or do a few trips up & down the steps, then of course you have the shingle(if I remember correctly)

It looks a bit on the pricey side on what I have seen for that, you could just go to B & Q or any other DIY store & mod your own foldable trolley, I think I picked one up a few years ago for about £15; then mod it with some with fat mountain board tyres or something, which thinking about is something I could do now, even If I just use it for hauling the stuff down to the beach with the family.

I have something like this in the garage(by the way, a god send when moving house):
Rhyas 70kg Strong Aluminium Lightweight Telescopic Folding Sack Truck Trolley Cart, Sack Trolleys
By the way I do not have that link as a favorite on my PC, I just found it on the web. Anyway there are other options on that site.........

Thanks for the info. Yes, even if its just for family trips to the beach it could be a useful thing to have. My float has backstraps and it's not too big deal a walk with.. but one mile down the track with lead to Worbarrow Bay and I'll be feeling it for sure ... especially on the way back.

Where there are lots of steps or steep inclines I'd leave it at home.
