Dorset Spear Fishing 2012

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.

I know for a fact that O2 has a cell on the hill at Lulworth Estate, i cannot comment on anyone else apart from VF does not...... yet. The mast is about a mile from the cove directly north, so it should afford a good signal. i cannot really remember what the signal is like, but i am with O2. Having said all that the topography of the area from the high cliffs will stop any signal getting in depending on where you are. For insatnce, you may not get a signal at Durdle Door, but get it at Lulworth.

Looking at some data I have the signal from O2 should be fairly good. Wish I could give a definitive answer.

If you said the coverage for Virgin is bad, then I wouldn't bother with EE(Orange T-Mobile) as they run the network provider for Virgin. Three also piggyback off the T-Mobile network, so not sure how they stand with coverage either. Get an O2 pay as you go SIM & take it from there & see if the covergae works, failing that next time you are in Lulworth, pop into the pub & ask the staff who they are on & what the best network is in there............ Simples

I've just called Lulworth Mill House which is along the small road to the cove (by the duck pond). The best provider is 02 which can also be patchy at times.

O2 it is then.

Mobile coverage at sea will always be patchy whichever network you use. Ideally VHF radio should be used but the downside is that you will need a licence which will cost about £100

Are you sure I've had a vhf for a year didn't know ya needed one any more? oops!:duh

You sure do need a licence and the course costs a wee bit but to be fair it was money well spent in my opinion as I learnt not only how to use the thing properly but exactly how to communicate with the coast guard correctly, particularly in an emergency situation.
Definitely worth doing IMO

Whaaaaat, a licence and a course for a VHF radio? Bloomin eck, sounds like money for old rope. I suppose you can't have any old Tom Dick and Harry clogging up the airwaves. I think I will rely on my old army VP(voice protocol) procedures ta very much.
Anyway, what will hey do if you are in an emergency and use the radio, are they going to lock you up or heaven forbid use the VHF radio to save somebody's life.

I have t got one, but if I had, I would suck it and see.

Anyway tis good to know.

I took the same approach Highlander.

I have a handheld VHF (currently in storage away from home ). I used to use it kayak fishing. I didn't do the VHF course. I simply read up on what procedures were required. I regularly called the coastguard for a radio check on CH16. I will get it back, put it in an aquapac and start taking it out with me.

I did 5yrs in the Ops room of Portland Coastguard (Weymouth Harbour side) and you’re quite right all we wanted is for people to carry the radios and other safety equipment so it is there when it's needed.

It's true that some training has benefited a lot of people but it's Ofcom that has to enforce the regulations (they can track and prosecute people that are misusing the radios). The Coastguard are only interesting in your safety and I’m confident Ofcom won’t be interested in an individual that has a radio and only does a radio check occasionally (but clearly we wouldn’t promote that as there are plenty of people I’ve heard that need some training).

www.ofcom.org.uk/ If you can carry one I would + if you can afford a course it’s worth it and always used to be a lifetime licence + Once you hear someone that has no idea about the voice procedures or radio operation you'll understand why the licence exists. It can sound painful but in an Emergency it'll still be a massive aid your recovery licenced or not.

Just in case anybody hasn't seen it...

They are very cheap prices on the rob Allen guns Kev. I'm sure they won't be around for long. Good luck with the sale
