Anyone out there know of any spots which might be worth a try east of Portland, preferably not requiring a 4 mile walk like getting to Mupe (!), let me know.

Mirror, thanks for the tips on the weather (I live in Oxford) and tent pitching - I've made a note to pack extra pegs!

No worries bud. Just go careful around Portland as there are only a couple of spots that are suitable for inexperienced spearos, especially if diving alone. If you do decide to dive Portland I would advise staying in close.

Don't worry Scooby, I'm happy to take your advice - If I do head down, I'll avoid Portland, particularly as I've never been before.
It's a little frustrating as I don't often get a free weekend to myself to go play but hey, no sense taking silly risks.

Any more advice from anyone on possible spots which might be worth a go, or anyone taking a dip, I'm all ears ;-)

If youve got some spare time on your hands check the Dorset spearfishing threads for previous years. This will give you an insight into which marks/areas are diveable in strong winds ; )

Family went to studland today, so jumped in at middle beach and swam to old harry. Two large fish seen but fast swimming and well out of range. Picked up and said hello to a few spiders (none large enough) and one baby spider that was v cute. Viz was around 2-4 meters. Zero current until I reached old harry where suddenly you get pulled out a bit.

Really nice swim and there's one large patch where the pink anemones are attached to sea grass - looks kinda cool.

Not a shot let off though - shame.

Did a big swim along the east side of Portland earlier. The Vis was naff on the surface (about 50cm) but then if you dived below it the Vis cleared to 3-4m milky. I saw and missed a shoal of mullet ranging between 2-4lb. And my brother missed another two stray mullet. Was a pleasant dive with depths ranging from 2-9m. There was a fair sized swell coming in but that didn't stop us going for a for a big swim

Good effort for getting in today scoobaru, it was not a great day for being on or in the sea - i guess the east side of portland offered protection closer in.

Yea there was still a swell rolling in. Thing is the further out you go the stronger the wind was but the waves were big and flat which I prefer to high steep waves as you tend to bob over the top instead of swallow water and get smashed up by the waves. But the problem in close was the waves became quite high and lifted you into rocks and the Vis was a lot worse. So couldn't win either way. But still any time spent in the sea is time well spent in my eyes

Last night's dinner: bass fillets sandwiched with flounder fillets, cooked for 15 minutes in foil parcels in a super-hot oven with white wine, butter, salt, pepper, fennel, parsley, and garlic. New potatoes dug from the garden while I was filleting the fish, and samphire collected from the cliffs at West Bay. A totally free dinner! Lovely

Got in earlier today. 2-3m viz but very murky and lots of debris. Quite a swell rolling in (glad I have a solid stomach) and quite a swell underwater too. Not a single fish seen I'm now wondering if my aspetto is exactly the sound a seal's stomach makes when it's really hungry?

Need to find some spots that actually have fish...I feel I'm on another planet compared to the more proficient hunters here!

GoT in last night for 2 bass, 6 flounder, 1 fat mullet and some scallops. Vis was 4 meters. Not many bass about

Well done Lee, family commitments and weather seem to have conspired to give me a three week dry spell, which I hope to rectify after work tomorrow. Probably take the kayak for a paddle in the harbour although I think wind will pick up again. Good diving to all.. I just need to get in more!
