Wow, awesome fish. Apparently there are some big Gilt heads to be had around Gnsy. Anybody coming over for the August Guernsey DB fish in?
Tried a few spots this morning, ended up near Bowleaze with just one golden grey mullet for my efforts.
Visibility was pretty average but much better on the bottom.
Also not for the first time spotted several Garfish jumping pot bouy ropes.

Just came back from an evening dive at ringstead with Ben. Overall it was pretty rubbish with 1 small bass, 1 small mullet and a couple colourful wrasse seen between us. Vis was also rubbish and the mist came in quite thick.
When we were leaving we passed a car that had 2 blokes in wetsuits, is it anyone from here and if it is how did you get on???

Hey Matt sorry to hear your dive was not as hot as it deserved to be..
My day at work was filled with thoughts of diving which were boyed by a call from Matt to join them at Ringstead, sadly despite the fact I was basically already there (I was at Lulworth with work) my dive gear wasn't and the turn around time and return journey meant I would miss the desired start time, so still keen I decided to try somewhere a little closer, a quick call to CLive Thomas on the way home saw a buddy arranged and an hour later we were in. Vis wasn't brilliant fairly milky and the water even felt gritty on my lips (although that may have been the wedges I ate on route) it was however diveable, a plan was hatched and a long swim out saw me locate enough scallops for a family meal tomorrow (apparently eight is enough to shove up my suit before it starts flushing!) and Clive bagged a few oysters for his better half to try. By this time the fog was in and the tide was all over the place, ripping left ripping right, and generally being a bit confused. So we headed in to check a few reefs and other spots with the intention of fishing until dark. I spent a while stalking a cuttlefish that turned out to be a plastic bottle :
then played a game of tag with a tiny undulate (sp?) ray, first undulate I have seen and his markings were amazing, he seemed amused by my speartip but being the size of a scallop he was left to grow significantly bigger. Clive surfaced from a dive full of expletives having spooked a large plaice, which would end up being the only shootable fish seen.
Once back around the reefs I picked up a nice spider crab for making a salad for work tomorrow with (with home grown veg of course) and enjoyed generally nosing around, no fish to be seen though. The tide on its continuing quest to fool us decided it was going to head out again so we chipped over to another spot. Unfortunately on route Clive managed to loose his new (thankfully empty) catch bag and I started to get some severe cramping in my hand (from an old injury) By now we had been in two hours and not seen much in the way of fish. A brief discussion saw us take the wise move of heading back on time for once and achieving those all to thin on the ground brownie points from our ladies for not being late!
All in all well worth the trip for me and good to get wet with good company. The spider went 3lb and a smidge so very nice. All prep done its now time for bed.. hope to be in again on Friday!

Good write up joe. Shame about the lack of fish, but at least you went home with something edible and you were back in time. That's double brownie points

Just got back from my first boat dive. Went down at 7.30pm and hooked up with Ben (Fearthespear) and also met John (Flyflicker...I think). Very nice to meet you John.
Headed out to a local spot where Ben anchored up and we jumped in. The depth was around 8m and the viz turned out to be patchy but definitely workable.
I dropped down to the bottom, lay down, and almost immediately had to come back up as my breathhold was pretty shocking! Thankfully it gradually improved thanks to Ben's very kind offer of covering me for a drift along the reef.
Ben came up from his first drop with a nice bass. I kept going down and seeing nothing but spiders and wrasse.
During my drift, I dropped down to the bottom at around 7-8m, lay in a gully in the reef, and watched huge wrasse swarm around me. Just as I was coming to the end of my breath, a really good size bass swam across in front of me. It had a quick look at me and then started to head away. I frantically thought "come back, come back" and did my very best ridiculous croaking noises which the bass gracefully ignored. It was getting quite far away so I took a shot at it and the line stayed tight. Woohoo! I was out of breath though so I let go and surfaced. Took a few breaths and followed my floatline down to the bass which was thankfully still attached. It turns out that my long-range shot had gone right through the gill plate. Very happy with that.
A couple of dives later my left ear started playing up and I just couldn't equalize, so Ben picked me up and we headed for home.
Really enjoyable dive, and a lovely fish to take home. Haven't weighed it as I don't have any decent scales (must get some). Not the best photo, but my phone has a crap camera and it was getting dark.
