Dorset Spear Fishing 2012

Hi Folks,

I’ve just returned from two days camping at Weston dairy campsite at Worth Matravers. It’s been an area I’ve wanted to spear for a while and so my wife and I took advantage of the good weather to dust off the tent and go to the beach. I’d also recommend the campsite as a great no frills site with a short walk to the square and compass pub.

On Thursday we went to Chapmans pool. The vis was a bit patchy in places but up to 8m in others. I think I swam the best part of the way to St Albans Head before heading back to save my wife the worry. Depths up to 12m less than 50m from the edge in places and some friendly Pollack shoals were seen, the terrain was good with real possibilities for a good fish or two I’m sure. I managed a nice bass for tea and managed to GoPro some of the Pollack and whiting shoals. I’d recommend the places as its great sceanery both above and below the water and there are fish to be seen. However after you have done it once I’d suggest most of you (me included) will think hard about whether to go back as the return trip up the hill is a killer. Red Bull will be your best friend as your legs feel like they are about to ignite or crumble beneath you.

Today we headed down to Winspit and I jumped in for a few hours. The vis was good in the shallows to 6m. The currents are significant just off the shore line and there is the occasional idiotic boat driver that forgets they aren’t the only person using the water when blasting along the coastline. Therefore a buoy is a must if you are thinking of straying away fromt he safety of the shore. The walk back wasn’t as bad as Chapmans (I’m not sure anything could be). It took about 30mins to walk back up the hill to the campsite (at a good pace) though I needed a change of t-shirt on arrival.

In conclusion I had a great couple of days and would recommend both dive sites though be under no illusions you will earn the experience.

Good luck!

Well done both of you. Have some rep....

Got back from a dive with will and joe. Vis wasn't as good as we hoped it would be, ranging from milky 4m down to about half a foot (could only just make out the blue colour in my watch in front of my face). Unfortunately I didn't see any shoot able fish, just small pollack and a beautiful wrasse of about 5lb that kept coming close to check me out.

Despite the lack of fish it was nice to get in the sea with the sun on my back

As matt said, went for a dive today with matt and joe. Vis was ok in places and rubbish in others. no fish taken although i did see 2 small mullet. was a nice dive with the sun out, and it gave me an opportunity to try out the go pro mounted that i bodged together 20 mins before the dive!

Beach closed off at West Bay today due to large shark sightings...........so mother says!!

Anyone diving tonight?

Im ready to see the shark again now iv got my gopro mounted!

Love it. Definitely have to start getting some good vids up on the internet

Went out to one of my usual spots with nobby, pud and newbie kevin. Hardly any fish seen, however i did hit every very good sized fish i saw:

My catch, mullet to just under 5lb, 2 more squid, red mullet and a nice little 3.5lb bass:

And kevin got his first bass! I'll let pud put up the pics

Just got back from a nice few days in Cornwall. Only did one dive - just a quick hour in the water at Sennen Cove yesterday. Viz was amazing despite the swell. Saw lots of fish, came back with a gold-spot mullet, a plaice, and a pollack.

As I was swimming back in, I spotted what I thought was a massive bass swimming towards me. But as it got closer I saw that it was a huge sunfish. It was incredible, just slowly ambling along near the surface. I followed it along for a while and admired it until it disappeared slowly off into the distance. Is it rare to see sunfish in our waters? It's certainly the first one that I've ever seen. Very pretty.

I've seen about 3 sunfish before whilst shore angling off chesil beach. But that was iver several years so they aren't very common. Well done in getting in Tom and an amazing experience being in the water with a sunfish

Anyone been in today - I was wondering how the vis off Chesil cove was looking?

A little photo of the 4lb Lobster i managed last night, it was waiting for me just after getting in the water. My first one of the season and towing it felt like i had a drogue attached to my buoy.

Went this Friday for night dive to Portland with 2 guys from SFA.
We've got in by midnight for 3 hours drift under cliffs of Chesil Cove.
As on low tide, there was some current, but totally flat sea.
Vis. was in short sections varying from 2-8m, no mater what the depth (max.15m)
Bottom with XL rocks covered with kelp created quiet exiting landscape.

Masses of plankton have reduced visibility at night (with LED-Q5 torches).
However, once switched of the torch,
in pitch black, the plankton created stunning lightning effects.
Every movement of hands or spear gun, created lightning.
I could see my moving arms and gun, just like the night scene in Avatar. ... Amazing!

Bioluminescent Plankton: What makes it glow?

I din't expect to see it here. Also in here it was more green, than blue light.

Unfortunately, there was no fish to shoot. Only schools of baby Pollock.

Was it just Bad luck, or wrong spot ???

We couldn't get in harbour, due to Olympics.

I didn't think the harbour was too ba at night. Me and will went out about a week ago in the harbour for about 3 hours an ha no trouble what so ever??

That's awesome about the plankton, I may do a night dive there just to see that

IT WAS A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME!

Well, Nobby and I decided to do a marathon dive; namley an 8 mile swim and 2 mile walk,,,,,not the best idea we've had.

Anyhow, got in at 6pm, left the water at 2am, walked on sinking shingle and swam across an estuary, back to the car by 3:30am; never again.

But we did get a very good catch if jumbo mullet, bass, triggers and plaice.

He he he, I know where that was - glad you tried it out, but not sure I'll be joining you there anytime soon :o

By the way, I love the picture of Farra expressing his amazement at the size of the trigger fish rofl

So went for a dive with joe yesterday. Had a long walk following a goats track down a steep hill and then went for a long swim. I saw a couple of small bass, mullet and a large shoal of pollock with the biggest being around the 2lb mark. Was amazing to watch them and a large wrasse coming in to see what I was. On the way back in I looked down and saw a bass around the 5lb mark, just as I shot it decided to move its head sideways avoiding my spear. So diving out a bit deeper (around the 7m mark) I couldn't equalise my right ear, until suddenly a loud pop followed by a squeezing noise.

After the long swim and uphill walk I got home and felt like I had been on the juice. The room was spinning I felt very nauseaus and my ear was throbbing. The same feelings all of today. Went to hospital to get it looked at and it turns out I've blown mucus and blood against my eardrum. It hasn't perforated yet but could still split due to the pressure build up. So looks like I'm out of the water for a couple of weeks....... Gutted

Cheers bud. Gutted really as the season has just got into full swing with the summer species making an appearance. Oh well I'm sure time will go really quick when I'm sat at home reading everyone else's dive reports lol
