Dorset Spearfishing 2007

Well I was there from the late sixties watching weigh ins over here in Guernsey. Obviously conservation issues were not so much of a concern in those days (big mistake) The catches were absolutely huge normally restricted only by the amount you could carry up the beach!
Some of the "open" comps would see top spearos from around the world competing, these guys would attract quite big crowed to the weigh ins & I would have to admit at the time I was very impressed!
Now we dont have any competitions in Guernsey we have f.....g great trawlers only 3 miles from our coast, day & night.

i was present at a wiegh in at thurlestone, south devon 3-4 years ago. it was the biggest public relations nightmare for spearos ever. letters went in to the local paper, a petition went to the National trust (the car park owners) demanding the NT not allow further use of the car park for this (mis)use. how 30 individuals think they can catch that number of fish and not affect the local public perception and more importatly the local ecosystem? ... if spearing is to carry on in the UK i cant see it surviving the high profile wieghins of competition.

I was at Thurlstone this year on the day of competition (just coincidence). I chatted to 4 old folk at the carpark overlooking the weigh-in area and they had been quite enthralled by the spectacle. They would have liked to have taken some fish home with them. (I didn't see the weigh in, as I was out fishing for dinner at the time; unaware of the competition. I must have gone in just as the first competitor came out. ).

It was overcast & there were not many folk about that day (the cafe' owner couldn't be bothered to cook chips - too quiet!).

RE. Dorset: forecast looked interesting for this Sunday but I won't be able to go this week.

Dived osmington today with 1 shot 1 kill. The sea was like a millpond and there was not a breath of wind.Water temp 13 deg so we stayed in for 2 1/2 hours in all.I decieded to go and look for flatties over the sand and 1 shot went in the other direction. The vis stayed at about 3 meters for the most part and i followed a reef while working my way to the sand.Sat below me in the weed was a nice bass which ended up on my stringer. This made me feel alot better as this was the same place and same shot as i lost a bass 2 weeks ago. After looking over the sand working hard in 5-7 meters i found no flatties or any trace of them so i deceided to try back along the reef for more bass. After about 1/2 hour in less than 2 meters i shot bass number 2 in the back of the head to stone him dead.

A nice dive and a nice way to end the season if work and the weather have their way.....but i hope not....

Big bass was 8.2 lbs and small one was 4.5 lbs...

Good work Gloworm, Osminton is a fine spot indeed! I was also in the sea today with Buster Lung. We managed a few fish and viz was up to around 5-6m in places. After getting in Buster missed a good fish after swimming 20 yds or so! We went our seperate ways and a few dives in I was buzzed by 4-5 good bass in a shoal but had that awkward 'couldn't get the gun round' moment! Soon after I managed to scare away a pair of bass, one of which was also big...feck!

A few dives later, as I was settling into the weed another fish was already checking me out and starting to move away. A rather lucky poke and hope shot nailed it through the gills...woohoo!

Moving around I saw no more bass for at least an hour. I returned to the earlier area and was surrounded with mullet. I inspected the shoal for passenger bass and had a shot at one...but missed! Time to call it a day and go to the pub! The bass was exactly 8lbs and Buster had a string of mullet. He also saw a few more bass, one good one, but couldn't get the shot off in time... What a great day out.

Incidently, did anyone here dive Chesil Cove today? We watched a spearo from the Cove Inn this afternoon.

Good luck tomorrow Mr Flicker...

Good job too Fearthespear and nice to hear that Buster is still going.

I was on the breakwater today, in for about 4hrs, saw nothing for the first two, then Mullet everywhere top to bottom, free swimming and in holes. I took 2 for the pot, both about 3lb. Then a shoal of Pollock arrived, tight to the bottom. took 2 of them as well also about 3lb. Then in the shoal of Pollock a nice 5lb Bass showed up..... he's now in the frezzer - nice (had the Pollock for lunch ummm!). Viz was patchy. Was getting cold by the time I got out.

Well done the others for good cathes today - the Bass are still here in good numbers then!!! There was a lot of bait fish about still, which is a good sign. maybe we will still be getting Bass up to Christmas, would be nice!

Sorry to miss your call Bryn, you about this week at all? maybe we can meet up (work permitting!).

That’s some good fishing boy’s.
I’m down tomorrow so might bump into somebody, lets hope for more of the same on Sunday.

Sounds like a great day had by those in the water.. Congrats to glowworm and fear, great fish those, i am gutted that i am in Derby and not closer to the sea. Might have to come down soon and get wet. Good luck tomorrow John and Brett, the gauntlet has been laid down!

Fearthespear that is a beauty not shot resting in a hole but shot fair & square, lovely looking fish mate very well done.

Nice mullet Buster.

I'm thinking of doing a night dive on tuesday this week if anybody wants to go.
