Dorset Spearfishing 2007

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
i just sickingly tried to buy an HF for my friend from Apnea but they get restocked in April...he's after a quality 90 and those guns look like they do the job well, sickingly because my better half fails to see the positive aspects of me purchasing a 75........

Taking a dip on sunday morn...first time since August 06! Now lets see...er...mask...snorkel...

Well excited! Big Willi is going as well. We'll let you know what we don't catch...

A Big Willi double figure to kick off 2007 and make us all ridiculously jealous....there go the burglars again!

Dived yesterday – the sea is amazingly warm at 12c in the shallows and only dropping to 10c at 8 metres. I checked my diary and in 2006 it wasn’t that warm until mid May!!!

Wrasse are back in numbers and the jap weed is growing; I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a bass or two landed in the very near future!

All I saw was a clutch of UK Spearos!

Er...thats the weather, not gas! Hey Surfandspear it looks like the Burglar will have to wait at home for a while again...sigh...

Were you following your buddy? Had he just peed in his suit?

I still haven't been in this year:eek: . Mind you though, to do myself some justice i surf all through the year so at least i am still getting wet.

Its good to hear that there are signs of life on the reefs though. Good work!

Interesting!?!?!?!? I think Lyme Bay is in their sights!!

Join our Save our Seas (SoS) team and help us make waves!
There has never been a more important time to stand up for the UK’s marine life. This year the Government will write wide-ranging new laws (Marine Bill) to control how our seas are managed and protected. We need your help to ensure that these laws provide a healthy future for our seas and sea life.

Prize draw: Sign up to SoS before 10th April and you'll be entered into a draw to win a place on our basking shark survey holiday.

To sign up visit Save our Seas

Background: The UK’s seas are extraordinarily rich in wildlife, harbouring more than 44,000 animal and plant species. Our seas are poorly protected compared to land and are under increasing pressure as offshore activities increase and climate change alters the marine ecosystem.

Less than 0.001% of our seas are fully protected from damaging activities such as indiscriminate fishing and gravel-dredging. The Marine Bill could bring in new laws to protect marine habitats and wildlife. Alternatively, the Marine Bill could end up helping the marine industries, whilst doing very little to improve protection for wildlife.

Save our Seas: As a member of the SoS team you’ll receive regular bulletins, including:

· Email updates on the UK Marine Bill and other hot topics in marine conservation.

· Tips and resources to help you get actively involved in our marine campaigns and projects.

· Invitations to take part in major campaign events.

In the coming year, we’ll be asking you to take action for marine wildlife in a variety of ways. This might include sending a letter or email to the Government, contacting your MP, collecting petition signatures, taking part in public events and helping to get marine conservation in the news. SoS activity will primarily revolve around the following key events:

White Paper (March to June) - Government launches White Paper consultation on the Marine Bill.
Marine Week (August) - The Wildlife Trusts lead a nationwide celebration of our seas, with events at coastal and inland locations.
Queen’s Speech (November) – We’ll be asking that for the Queen’s Speech to include the Marine Bill.
We’ll keep you up to date throughout the year and prompt you to take action at the critical times.

If you've already signed up, we'll be in touch very soon with the latest marine conservation news.

For more information about our Marine Bill Campaign, visit The Wildlife Trusts

The above is a grand idea and both the Wildlife Trust & Natural England want the same as all of us – sustainable fisheries, whilst protecting the environment.

Lyme Bay is the main target to turn it into protected fisheries area; with anglers needing licences and only a small amount of ‘sustainable’ fishing. (no mention of spearos)

After the VERY frosty reception we received when launching at Kimmeridge last year I think they need to know that we aren’t mass killers of the seas etc. etc.. It needs the BSA (as I guess they are the only national voice we have) to work with them at an early stage, I'm sure there would be a happy out come and I would even join the BSA in thanks, maybe we should all join now and start things rolling?????

neveradullday is the new BSA chairman and posts on DB - i will Pm him and see if he has a point of view.

Neveradullday (Glen) is actually away for three weeks, hunting very big fish. So you won't get a reply. I am holding the fort for the next few weeks so you can PM me if you wish.

Regards Kev

Should say that as an organisation the BSA has been in touch with DEFRA concerning the new marine bill (there are a number of posts on the BSA forum, including one today concerning minimum size limits for bass. That said the BSA minimum size limits for Bass have been at 40cm and above for a number of years ( in Sussex waters 45cm minimum for at least the last four years.
In Sussex, the Sussex Spearfishing Club have worked closely and effectively with the sea fisheries committe for a number of years. An example of this is that as part of our voluntary agreement we do not shoot wrasse or conger eels.

Stuckinsurrey and myself had a look around Portland yesterday. Viz. not great but well fishable water temp 9 degrees weather was absolutely fantastic with lovely sunshine although the wind was a touch fresh. Stayed in for around 2 hours and the upshot was I’ll be eating Oysters and Scallops and Jim will have Flounder for tea.
I’ve got to just say that the Flounder was a hell of a shot he hit it in the head while the fish was on the move and Jim was at the wrong angle in the first place, nice one Jimmer.:martial

I'm off to christchurch this weekend and reccommendations???

Yeah & happy birthday from me too.
Hope you make it over this year mate.
