Hey folks

Do you guys start moving before the duckdive (to create forward momentum)? The reason I ask is because of some doubts I have:

-Assuming you take your last inhale as you move forward, would this make you lose oxygen?
-Is going forward necessary for a good duckdive, or, the vertical position is all you need to go down in he first meters?

Please, feel free to talk what you do/think about this things. Cheers!

There are several duck diving techniques, both legs up with bent knee, both legs up with straight knee, one leg up. The first has no forward motion, the second and last varies with how you do it. The first is supposed to be the most energy efficient. I've experimented quite a lot with the first and second and can see no difference in how deep I get. The first does require less energy, but also requires getting the technique just right. The fins you wear effect what technique is best.

For spearfishing, do what you are comfortable with.

When teaching people to duck dive I usually start with getting them to think about moving forward (but not too quickly) and then dive like they are rolling forward over a barrel. Leaving whether they lift one or both legs out, have a bent knee or whatever, up to them (I explain these before we get in the water).

This gets most people duck diving OK and we can then work more on things like body position, timing of when they start to kick, head position etc. When we are doing this in a pool I get them to see if they can get efficient and see how close they can get to the bottom of a 5m pool without kicking.

Th next stage is to then get them to do it with no forward movement - this is needed when diving on a freedive line.
