Dummies guide to Spearfishing - Part I

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Its a good rule book for any hunting, fishing e.g. Stainless steel is a great product but shines and shimmers showing your position in the sea or on land.

I spent 20 years in the USMC but spearfishing is not like combat. Many divers put shiny tape on their guns and fins to attract fish. I'm convinced that I see many fish because they knew I was there and came to check me out.

Yep- I have used shiny tape on my gun and fins which seemed to pull fish in. I've also cut up foil 'space blankets' and attached strips on my float line which undoubtedly pulled pollock in as they came to investigate.
The reef fish we hunt in Scotland generally know exactly where you are.
Personally when I'm spearfishing I don't really care whether my suit is black or cammo or if I have bright coloured bands or shiny bits flashing everywhere - it doesn't matter. What really matters is how you move and appear to the fish. You could consider yourself invisible to them but if you move like a predator they will stay their distance.

Spearfishing will never be like combat but you can use what you were taught by using it in a different method and spearfishing can be an attack option and ambush option or shimmer can be used as to lure fish as you would a lure whilst fishing with a rod.
If i am spearfishing in a heavy Kelp bed i use the ambush option. Some fish are more curious than others i have found and some bolt away which require different methods so it depends on what type of fish your after where you spearfish.
