G'day

When most people talk about dynamic apnea (without flippers), do they mean swimming freestyle along the surface, or swimming breast stroke under water?

Also, do other countries call fins, flippers? (In Australia, people in the know, call flippers fins, but everyone else calls them flippers)

I did my pb w/o flippers today, swimming 50m along the bottom w/ breaststroke.

Is it just me? or do some days you just do _way_ better than other days. Like most of the time, I do ok, but every now and then I'll achieve like 50% more than usual. (before returning to normal on subsequent days)

Yes, dynamic apnea is mostly (I never saw one doing it on the surface) done underwater. But it could be done this way without problem. Core of dynamic apnea is swim (somehow) without breathing. But since we are divers, we try it doing while being underwater. :)
Breast stroke is used when without fins, or dolphin kick or scizzors kick when with them. Arms stretched forward or along the body.
I heard about someone doing dynamic with kick only - without arms.

I personally call fins fins :) but I'm not from English speaking country so ...

Here in the States, my first scuba instructor Richard Simon (may he rest in peace) would make you SWIM LAPS if you called them "flippers". :D And congrats on the DNF of 50m! I'm up to a 40m DNF myself, and hope to hit 50m maybe next week.

Apnea on the surface can be decent training.
For example, you can do pyramid freestyle, taking breath on every n-th stroke. You can do the same with monofin, front snorkle and a float.
And a single breath, 50m, full throttle fly is a killer. :D

I sometimes do dynamic apnea on the surface as training. If I am wearing a buoyant suit with no weights, as I do for static, and then I decide to do dynamic, it is a good way of training.
