Hi guys newbie here, I’ve got a mate who is into spear fishing and hunts mostly on the Dorset coast which I plan on joining him for.

However I’m in south Somerset so the nearest beach To me is Lyme Regis with West bay and Seaton also within striking distance. Searching online doesn’t bring up much for these locations but I was out on a kayak in west bay yesterday morning and the water was pretty clear. Are these locations likely to be worth trying out? Looking to catch anything I can eat!

Do you mean West Dorset, rather than East? If the water is clear, that sounds quite promising. Yes, worth fishing, as long as conditions are good (calm, good viz). West Dorset is more exposed than some other areas but if the water is clear it suggests that conditions might be good. There are also some small bays, like Eype and Seatown (cf. Seaton), on that coast that can be interesting, in the right conditions. Is Torbay too far?

...and let us know how you get on, either on this thread or the Dorset 2020 thread. ;)

Yeah brain fart, west Dorset/east Devon I meant!
Torbay is an hour from me so that’s reasonable, is that a bit of a hotspot? I’m probably going to try it all at some point but I’m really hoping Lyme especially is worth it as it’s the closest me

Torbay isn't one location but many. I don't know about hotspot but can be quite good and more sheltered than many areas, although not from today's easterly winds. Today's the winds are very low though - which is good for you if heading to East Devon/West Dorset: https://www.xcweather.co.uk/

Lyme is probably good. I only visited once and conditions were not conducive to spearing and the whole family came down with flu :( But it looked to have potential. Beer too. Budleigh Salterton?
