Elios Suit for Uk Spearing

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
It's an indoor pool! :D

The pool is about 25-27C, and I still get cold sometimes! I only get warm if I start moving around a lot. For static I always use the 5mm suit. For dynamic I use a 2mm shorty and shiver for most of the session.

I would suggest a tot of rum or a hot toddy but it's probably not the done thing! I wouldn't dare wear my wetsuit in a heated pool for fear of overheating. Is this an freediver thing (mammalian response or trained circulation change) or just you? Tell me you are not wearing a hood. :)

I usually don't wear the hood.

I think it's just me - none of the other freedivers I know have the same problem with the cold that I do.

I started [ame="http://forums.deeperblue.net/showthread.php?t=52821"]this[/ame] thread some time ago.

Hot toddy... now there's an idea... :D

Getting back to Elios suits: I too am ordering a 5mm suit from Eliosub. I originally was going with plain open cell inside, no coating or lining. Elios is recommending their new black coating, saying that the suit will slide on easier, but it will still be very, very warm - but also, that I will still need to lube up.

Does anyone believe there is a benefit to their new black coating inside if Elios' own suggestion is still to lube up? Can the black coating make it that much easier to put on? Any loss in warmth with the black coating? Does it add stiffness 9make the suit less flexible)?

Last - any comments on their new semi-camo pattern they call "New Images?"

Can anyone answer these question?

thanks!

No loss of warmth. Yes it is easy - but you need lube. I can do the bottoms with no lube but my heels tend to get stuck on the cuffs. The suit is very soft, comfortable and does not retain odors. The inside also dries almost instantly.

I dive comfortably in 1C water in my 5 mil.

Thanks. Did not think of the 'smell factor' with open cell or the drying time. Good points. I'm decided. Any thoughts on the semi-camo for reef hunting?

Benthos and Pelagos look very cool - but are available only on smoothskin neoprene - no nylon outside etc. Personally I'd be reluctant to get that - my experience is very limited - but I know if I'd not gotten superstretch on the outside I'd have seriously blown this suit out by now.

Which is not to say you won't handle it better - just be sure and use lube.

Hey Carp, thanks. BTW, I checked out you pics in Lake Michigan. Just awesome. How deep are those photos and how COLD is it down there?? Is that gal crazy to be in the water without a wetsuit?!!

Pics toward the bottom are winter - obviously (you can tell by the ice - right?)
That's my daughter - I've seen her go with no suit in water that gave me an ice-cream headache - that day I think it was mid-sixties. Theres usually allways a thermalcline - sometimes two - often in the 50s f regardless of surface temp.

Deepest is about 25-35 feet - some of the carp, trout and bass shots. The Gar and huge bass were fairly shallow in the rocks - rough day with the gar - we had to be careful not to crash into him!

Fondueset covered the black lining. I have the open cell & find it just fine too; you quickly learn how to don & doff it (head first, per Eliossub website). I told Elios my needs & I followed their recommendation, I figured they are the experts & I decided to trust them. I was pleased with the service and the result. They gave you different advice because your needs are different. I'd listen to them.

I got a simple 5mm black spearo suit. In the future, I would consider a partial camo [see the Jersey spearos website - they did some research on camo vs. partial camo vs. no camo and partial came out top for them]. I am also wondering if 3mm trouse with 5mm jacket might be a good combination for me -- so that my legs float less, I can carry less weight and I don't overheat (my suit was toasty in November). Alternatively, a 3mm suit with farmer john (long John) bottoms -- to give some upper body cover while kayaking w/o top.:hmm On a similar thread last year, several med-based spearos mentioned using nylon covered bottoms (for wear-resistance) & smooth skin uppers. Lots of options & possibilities.

The "new images" looks good - partial camo. As the exterior is uncovered ("unlined"), you might need to be careful around rocks & edges (& get some Picasso glue). Unlined exteriors seem to be recommended for boats (they dry quicker) & freediving (hydrodynamic). I dive mainly from shore, so I plan to stick with protective nylon exterior for the time being. I had a tri-suit that was unlined exterior (lined interior) - and they look great & are good to swim in, I never got any damage but it was used only for open water swimming.

[That looks like a picture of forum member Spearo Dave with Colin Chester wearing Elios camo (I obviously look at way too many spearo galleries) -- might be worth asking him. Looks like an excellent catch.]
