Not to worry, but freaking out will not help, at all.

You are pushing to equalize and going too deep too fast. That is irritating your Eustachain tubes and probably your sinuses. They swell up, the air passage get small and partially full of fluid, hence the squeaks and hisses. Practice equalizing shallow and slow. Chill. Learn frenzel if you don't already know how. As you get better, it will be less irritating and you can progress deeper. Lots of divers go through this, its ok.

Caution: you can really screw up your ears by pushing when you are not equalizing easily. Be careful.

One good rule of thumb to remember is that if something weird happens with your ears, quit diving for the day. Once you damage your eardrum it will start to swell and will just get harder and harder to equalise, doing more damage. Your ears should heal up just fine but it will take way longer if you keep pushing it after something goes wrong.

Edit: if you are feeling pressure in your forehead that is probably a sinus squeeze. That might just be a one-time occurrence (caused by a cold) but you might just have bad sinuses, either way take it SLOW. Any tension will just make it way harder to equalise.

yea dude dont push it. you may have some sinus issues as they said, swelling or an infection. i had trouble when i started. i listened to everyone telling me how to pressurize, and nothing seemed to work. then i read somewhere to just swallow about every 10 foot, and for me it worked. i remember when trying to learn and couldnt pressurize it hurt like a bitch. be careful and take your time and youll figure out what works for you.

Sounds like you've got a reverse block if it's still hissing out of your ear for some time afterwords. You need to go real slow if that's whats happening.

I know two divers that blew out their ear drums from reverse blocks at the end of technical scuba dives. Both had blocked ears that were hissing, but neither one was able to drop back down far enough to sit and let it work it's way out- too much deco to do.

When it comes to freediving you have even less time to sort things out- because you only have the single breath in your lungs. With my scuba students i tell them to drop back down and let it work it's way out and then ascend slower so it has less of a chance of happening again. They have tanks of air on their back and are in non-deco mode so they can get away with doing it.

You might want to check how clear your ears are before you push anything. I know that this spring had been hell on my allergies and that can block you up. You could try limiting your dairy and sugar intake to limit mucus production, or you could try drinking plenty of water and use a Neti pot to clear things out.

Of course, you could always talk to your doctor- which is always better than trying to get free medical advice off of the Internet. rofl

Good luck with it,

Jon

I get and have the exact same problem when my hay fever gets bad. I also get a pain behind my right eye which hurts like hell.
