exhale o2 n co2??

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
In general any breath-hold practise helps.

But in general if you are a beginner, dive and practise with full or just under full lungs.
You do this because with full lungs the safety margin is much bigger, meaning you as a beginner have a more time to explore and detect your limit, inch by inch.

When diving empty lungs, the time difference between feeling perfectly fine and going BO can be very short!

In other words you're doing a nice empty dynamic and at the moment you realise your time is up and BO before you reach the surface.

That's just one of the reasons empty lung diving is considered 'very advanced'.

You can do a search for FRC diving here on DB too, it's not empty lung diving, but it hovers somewhere between full lungs and empty lungs in the amount of air. The FRC approach offers some unique advantages in experience, though it is more challenging and difficult to reach the full lung numbers. Some consider FRC diving 'advanced' and not suited for complete beginners.

In my current opinion I think it's better to first get your grips on safety, breathing technique, relaxation, swimming technique.

After a session or 10, having an idea what CO2 feels like, you can try some FRC in the pool with a knowledgeable buddy(!).

Are you meant to exhale slowly acording to the exhale apnea time or let all of your air out and then hold for the time specified??

:head

take a breath, pause and then exhale slowly, very slowly to about 1:30 total time. Then take a breath and do the whole thing again. First couple cycles I usually cannot hold full 1:30 but rather just under a minute. On third cycle I am in the "groove" and can repeat the cycle until I am "blue in the face", 10 cycles or more. Not sure if this is any good training routine, its just feels so cool. And I think it has more rights to be called "exhale apnea" then anything else. :friday enjoy CO2 narcosis
