Extreme Dolfinism G2

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
You are finally getting some good pics from a lot of places. I love the one with the little girl, great composition.

Who is the diver/with Orca in the Performance Freediving video. Same fin as the pic with the little girl?

That would be Wes Lapp, and that is the same guy as from the previously posted picture with the little girl riding on his back.

I used my new Dol Fin Pilot 2 and also experimented with hands in front and arms along side to get a hang of the best kick technique. It is less forgiving for the first 2 laps than the glide type fin but quite better than early model monofins with more straight footpocket to blade angel. I guess im more suspicious about technique beeing very tricky just because it is a new fin concept to me but I must say the lerning curve is not that steep. I wonder how the Pro Dol-Fin is compared to the Pilot-2?

HI PoseidonSv, I've used both a sort of early version of the Pilot and the Orca. I had a very slight curve to get going and be reasonably efficient with either fin. Basically I just put them on and swam and dove for a couple of hours out in open water. Of the two, the Orca is definitely a bit more demanding. I think it's because the blade is out further from your feet - but the differences are more in nuances of technique you can use to get the most out of the fin. In terms of just getting in and going I think you are pretty well set with good mono fin technique. I agree that the pilot is more in the class of the Waterway Nemo - but with better blade angle and probably an edge in performance.

Is interresting that i took the first swim without reading any impressions and it remarcably how much similarities in experience there is with the different Dol-Fin models between us.

In case anyone is interested, that picture is of a Glasair Sportsman behind me. It's a nice airplane design and I had the opportunity to help out with some flight testing on that particular one. The airport is next to a lake. It is always nice when I get the chance to blend my two recreational passions, diving and flying.

For The Record: I was wondering

That's what I love about freedivers and engineers....

MOST ppl would never consider doing flight testing on a plane...

IF they dare... The "normal" person would make DAMN sure there was a parachute VERY close nearby...

BUT, this engineer freediver insists on bringing a swim fin with him while testing a plane over a lake!!!

Most "normal" people couldn't bring themselves to jump out of an airplane even if they had a parachute. Unless the wings fell off, or it went into a flat spin, you'd probably be better off staying with the plane anyway. Most small airplane crashes are not fatal.

Grateful and trusting of pilots.... Still....Your reef gliding may have some similarities to free fall. Flying but without the plane. Inability to climb is the biggest limitation to fun in free fall..... Still an incredible experience!

Surprises me more pilots don't take the leap. They are already confident in the sky.

A side-by-side comparison of the DOL-Fin Pilot and Pilot2 monofins with white shoes. The main difference between these two products is the bolt interface for the shoes. The Pilot interfaces to the Shimano SPD pattern and the Pilot2 interfaces to the Look pattern.

First Picture: Pilot2 on left and Pilot on right.

Which model do you like best?

As there's precious little difference between the fins, themselves, as you say it all boils down to the shoes and how they're mounted. Knowing what I know now, I'd go with the Look System interface and the Pearl Izumi Tri shoe with the wrap around heel guards (less slippy), Velcro closure and the heel loops are a nice touch too.

I'm very happy with my Pilot2 but would go for Tri shoes next time. Also happy with Look System, great range of shoes to choose from.
