Hi I'm a medical student and have a question regarding sleep during apnea.

As i will do an EEG study of freediving in the future, (also deep diving), I would like to know of cases of people who fall asleep during apnea. I know that Branko Petrivic did.

So please post if you had similar experiences or know about people falling asleep during apnea.

Best Regards Bernhard Zogg

Do you want to make some connections with paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea?I would really be interested to read the study when you finish.

I have.
It was on a near perfect day, just a little very light breeze with warm sunshine and next to no tide flow.
Breathing up after being in the water for an hour or so and after around 15 or so dives I was lead on the surface slowly inhaling and exhaling and the next thing I knew I had a mouth full of sea water. I can only thing that I must have fell asleep and the snorkel dropped out of my mouth. Woke up a bit sharpish after that though.
Carried on with the spearing and had a great day with no harm done other than a bit of p*ss taking from my dive mates.

Thanks for your replies, I'm interested in knowing if there are freedivers who literally fall asleep during static or a deep dive( like brako petrovic during spearing)

My study would measure brain waves during sta, dyn, and cwt or fim but this is at the earliest in 2013/2014

I have two subjects sara campbell and branko petrovic that are ideal for case studies....
That will be my doctorate thesis I think...

I've seen in training the falling sleep part but not sure that the being asleep has a long duration.

I would expect a study of brain activity during apnea compare to people use to achieve a deep meditative state to be easier.

Finding someone that is predictable and easily put to sleep while doing apnea has to be a challenge.

falling asleep during apnea... sounds like the state you reach with extra good relaxation!

have not reached that level so far but I hear that some experts use hypnosis to prolong their dives

I've done it 2x in training. Once in a full-lung o2 table breath hold an a second time at full exhale!

Wildly relaxing and surprised myself the first time!

There's a guy in Toronto with a 6 min breathhold and he's in his mid 70's. He tries to fall asleep during his statics. Not sure if he ever achieves it though.

I've fallen asleep plenty of times while doing a static in bed when I first started freediving. I am sure I can reproduce it too as I am sleep deprived and tired most of the time lol

I tried to do it in the water too by imagining I was lying in bed and was really tired - it almost worked for a bit. I don't think it helps that much, just some time passes but then you wake up all confused and wonder if you've blacked out :) the sad think is that the first few times it happened to me I thought I must have been sleeping for mins but it was literally seconds - boo

I have had little micro sleeps in statics, but i don't know how long they last, i'm just aware when i come back around, they must be short, i don't blow bubbles or start snoring or anything :) Its quite nice actually.

Deep dives i don't fall asleep, just changed relaxation state, i'm less aware of external stuff going on, like what is happening doesn't really matter, so slowed reactions rather than sleep.

I sometimes fall asleep during dry apnea tables. But I will automatically start breathing again when I fall asleep and then I wake up and I am annoyed that it ruined my table.

I would really be interested in how branko or sarah manage to hold their breath while actually sleeping. Personally I cannot believe they really sleep, maybe, like it was already said, it is some state of meditation.

No sara doesn't do that she is just a subject for deep diving study;=)
Branko fell asleep during spearfishong

Year's ago I heard that Umberto fell asleep at depth. Anyone remember? I think Will told me.

This might seem like a silly question but can you tell the difference between a deep meditative state (as some might achieve in a static) and sleep?
