Hi,

I'm David, I'm a keen swimmer and surfer and have recently been to Fiji and lived in a small village on Beqa Island. Whilst I was there I stayed with a freediving night fisherman who opened up his small shack, and gave us expert hospitality in which I would recommend anyone wanting to get off the tourist trail. We ate plenty and heard multiple stories about his trade as a night diving fisherman. He allowed me to photograph all his diving equipment which a little worse for wear but still very usable.

I signed up to ask about where I could get second hand equipment, or even hand me downs, in which I could send to him, in hope I can repay the hospitality that he provided to me. On top of which if anyone is planning a trip to Fiji in the coming months, and wants to get off the tourist trail, and see life from a Fijian perspective, and even do some night diving or free diving yourself he would be the perfect local guide.

That sounds like an awesome trip! How did you hear about the spearfisherman?

It's great, all you need to do is speak to locals in Fiji they all want to help you have a great time. We met a local guide who was doing bush tours in our resort and we told him what we wanted to do - "Get off the tourist trail, and live with a Fijian Family." he proposed we should go and visit his brother. This brother happened to be the spearfisherman extrodinaire.

That's cool that it worked out that way. Tourist destinations can be nice, but you don't get a feel for a place until you experience it from the local perspective.

That's really cool. I was chatting with someone only a couple of days ago who suggested we head to Fiji for excellent diving experiences that aren't already being done by the masses. He said not to pre-book anything, just relax and ask the locals once we got there. Thanks for sharing. I knew I could trust the word of the person I was speaking to, but you've just double-confirmed his advice.
