Fantastic, that is great news especially considering you are just about the only guy building guns on db at this time of year.
You will find parcel tape very useful. if you cover any surface with parcel tape epoxy wont stick to it so cover the 2x1 with the tape before you clamp up the carbon T jig.

what do you know about painting spearguns? i want to camo a couple and i was wondering what is gonna stick to teak? and what to finish it off with for a clearcoat. what about varnish? i have no experience with varnish at all. i was thinking of just wiping gun with acetone, painting it with oilbased hobby paint, and clearcoating it with epoxy. i did that with a couple of ikijimi spikes, and the camo looks beautiful. but i kinda want to look into varnish. is that stuff really hard? i heard it is.

I would epoxy the gun first in any case, then you have various options - spray paint from a can, spray paint from a compressor & air gun, hand paint with brushes.
I normally use acrylic spray paint from a can.
Topcoat with two pack polyurethane clear varnish, you mix this stuff like epoxy but it is very thine & gives a beautiful smooth finish. I finish all my guns with two pack nowadays.
I brush coat the two pack, you can buy this from boat chandlers.

yeah sounds about right. the varnish comes out smooth, even though you brush it? sand the epoxy before paint obviously. what do you think about a red gun? easy to see on the surface, at depth looks grey. like a red snapper. definately good for scuba spearos.

You might consider using a composite "T" section - maybe carbon or ally, that would add strength & rigidity to your stocks. (although they look very strong to me anyhow)

Fox I've been making a similiar gun for over 1 yr now I basically have CF internal (b/t lams) and a CF belly, Jason has seen them. The CF allows me to make the the guns the absolute thinness possible while avoiding barrel flex.

Jason, glad the graphite I gave you has worked out...remember a little goes along way!

yeah i used what you gave me on the first 2. i bought a can now,(10$) seems like you want about 1/2 teaspoon per track,(long gun/ 11 pumps of west system) the first two, i used about a teaspoon. now i think they are gonna dull my bits. live and learn...........

Hey foxfish.
Ever used surfboard epoxy as a finish? Supposedly both clear and hard, as well as uv stable.
If so, how did it compare with the marine 2 pack?
Both about the same price........
Cheers.

I dont think the epoxy used to coat surfboards is any different to the one we use to glue up our guns with?
People have used epoxy for a topcoat on guns for many years but it has a couple of disadvantages, it is not very resistant to uv light & will turn opaque in time, it is very difficult to get a even smooth finish.
At one time I would flat it down with wet n dry paper & then buff with a rubbing compound but now I use two pack polyurethane marine grade varnish!
This stuff is designed for top coating, is very tough, uv resistant & much easier to apply.

Thanks for your reply foxfish, I'll give the 2 pack poly a try.
There are differences with the surfboard epoxy, mainly it is designed to resist uv 'yellowing', and has a very clear finish. Google up 'kinetix R104 surfboard' if you want a look at the details. It can be finished with a poly topcoat if required, but I've read of guys in the US using it as a specific finish with reputedly excellent results.
Regards Nigel.
