Finnish national DNF record broken in television

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I have to agree with Bill on this issue. We should think in the way of simplyfying the rules not making them more complicated. The soultion to Truxes doubts would be to ask of an athlet to push off (also with legs) from the wall not from the step. Usually the step is so high that this would really be a major problem for some who like to swim near the bottom (I sometimes have problem even touching the wall with a hand above the step).

But what I was trying to say (and I have experienced this more then once) is that judges are not unified regarding this issue and some have also been rather confused at briefings before the competitions. So AIDA should maybe inform all the judges how to perform unanimously - that is all I was trying to say.

And yes, of course - to stick to the subject: congratulation to both competitors - great dives!

Both judge and athlete can visually control touching of the wall higher than step. Both cannon see the kicking below wall's step at the edge of the step. In DYN such control absolutely impossible (which part of a fin touch which part of the wall?).
Trux, you are neither judge nor competitor (yet). So, keep your movement of "a spherical freediver in vacuum environment" out of site.

How about adding just a a clause on where it specifies pool length and depth:
"there must not be a variation of greater than 15 cm in the wall"

Which translates to: in any normal pool you simply don't have to care about the ledge

Trux maybe you can come up with a short, clear, precise and logical proposition rule?

Or reword the existing rule to be improved.
I think the better defining the wall and adding a maximum lips, steps, hollows size would help.

I find the current rule workable, but agree that the wording can be better.

I like clear short rules and definitions.

When I would write such thing I would start of with a listing of freediving specific definitions.

Like:

The wall, wall =
The floor, floor =
The side wall, side wall =

Than define the goal of the game.

Than add boundaries, limitations, exclusions and penalties.

My DNF experience.

To my experience lips, steps, hollows usually cost me distance and energy. A flat wall makes for much easier coordination of arrivals, turns and pushes. Guessing your depth or watching ahead to swim at that perfect depth level takes away relaxation. It also allows my pushes to be much stronger, because I'm much more certain I do not slip of the ledge hurting myself while I push of the wall strongly.

I prefer a level pool, being something 1,40m - 1,60m deep with flat walls, markings on the floor, no current, 28c - 29c and overflow edges.

What are your experiences?

Finally I've seen it!
In IE 7 it did work. Maybe the FF add blocker blocked the video too?
I think it's a cool freediving show, complete with you guys preparing, exiting final part. To bad they did not show a little longer shots of your techniques. I also missed some vocal sports comments while you were swimming. I did saw a special surfacing technique Mikko, tell us about it!
How long were your lap and dive times?

Love, Courage and Water,

Kars

As I wrote I find this rule interpretation fine, and respecting the only practical way of turns. The problem is that judges (and competitors) do not know how to interpret the rules. That's why the suggestion of either clarifying them, or adding an appendix with explanatory instructions and examples, or dropping the clausule 5.17 which makes it all unnecessarily more complicated, and in fact is rather useless. If there is no clausule 5.17, there is also no doubt whether the step may be used as propulsion support, but it remains clear the actuall wall needs to be touched.

In Hawaii The Pacific Cup 2002? The 50m pool was shortened at the deep end by a 1 metre deep and wide pontoon. We had to swim under it (so around 5 feet deep not to be impeded by it) to do 50m lengths, or use it to touch & push to save 2 metres. The judges had to do the maths. The real problem was if the approach to the wall was at 3 feet, the turns would fail completely. Above that and the turns were virtually on the surface and were also rubbish.

The point is, any advantage gained to the performance is outweighed by having a ledge or step getting in the way. So I think a few inches (as most ledges are only narrow) saved doesnt make any difference as long as national or world records are not at stake.
