It's interesting to see the garfish isn't too far behind the 11lb bass. It is a British record and it can't have been easy to hit it either.
When it came time to choose between my thorny and my pollack for the poll I wasn't sure which to pick. The ray is third in HOF whereas the pollack doesn't even come near but in the end the pollack was worked hard for but the ray was unexpected. It flew into range and all I had to do was line up the gun and shoot.

No contest for me, it has to be the garfish.
A huge specimen, very hard to hit.
Now, a nice big ray . . . might have voted for that . . . those pollack are so last year.

rofl We do have douits, which are streams to you mainlanders, but I can't think of one that is too wide to step over, so all far too small for anything but sticklebacks (actually there are a few trout in one of them, but only because they've escaped from one of the reservoirs where they are stocked for fishing).
As I work for the water company I could tell you more but I'm sure you're not really that interested eh! zzz

Yeah, I'd have voted for that ray too, if it had been in (and everyone I know on this site has said the same thing).

Pollack will never be last year. They're a fish that breeds and grows fast, dives and fights hard, looks streamlined and beautiful and lives in rocky, interesting landscape. They may not taste as good as bass or indeed ray but I'll always love them, even if they don't win me fish of the month.
I'd like to see Dan's garfish win. Have you any photo's of you holding it Dan?

Pollack will never be last year. They're a fish that breeds and grows fast, dives and fights hard, looks streamlined and beautiful and lives in rocky, interesting landscape. They may not taste as good as bass or indeed ray but I'll always love them, even if they don't win me fish of the month.

Re comparing fish for taste.
I don't think the issue is which fish tastes better, it's how good a meal you can make with it.
Last year some London restaurants were charging almost £20 for a dish of 'line caught pan fried Cornish pollack'. Good for them I say.
A really fresh pollack that's been bled and quickly gutted can make a meal to rival most fish dishes.
If you've never tried this . . .
take a big boneless fillet, let it reach room temperature (important).
Pat it dry with kitchen roll.
Season well and roll in seasoned flour.
Shake-off excess flour and dip into beaten egg.
Cover in FRESH breadcrumbs.
Now, fry it off in a heavy non-stick pan, with a small amount of oil over a medium heat, people tend to use too much oil and too much heat.
The fish is done when both sides are a crispy golden brown, stick a knife in the thickest part just to see, oh, if you have a tapered fillet try to keep the thin end out of the pan for a while so as not to over cook it.
Serve with a home-made tartar sauce and fresh green salad or chips or baby new potatoes.
This is not just 'OK' or 'edible' as I've heard pollack described, it's absolutely stonking delicious and we should all eat lots more of them.
Rant over now back to the p!ss-taking.

Nah,.... bass is common as my mother-inlaw.
That garfish looks like it's doing an impression of size 0 model. Needed a good feed to keep its strength up. No wonder it got shot. Couldn't swim off fast enough

I have just seen on the BSA Website that the British record for the Garfish has stood since 1966! That's one he'll of a record to break - nearly as old as me!
