Fish of the month/year discussion thread 2010

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.

Another brilliant season Dave! A double figure bass and pollock in a summer is great fishing!

Got any more targets before the end of the season? Bream? Big mullet? Big flatty?

Well done sunfish!!
Yep the 2008 fish was in 18m of water with lots of high spots on a very long stretch of reef. We were drifting and just diving when it looked good! then getting picked up by the boat to steam back up tide. The tide was really pushing through when I got the fish. There was a group of good fish on the down tide section of a large pinnacle and I had time to get in the lee of the current and take a shot before getting whisked away!

Nice bag! Not often you get a Dory and a Trigger together.
I was diving in a huge school of Triggerfish recently, there must have been over 100 in the school. I find they don't all school up, there are always a few stragglers feeding away on the edges and they tend to come and go.
I might take some video footage as well, pretty cool to see so many at the same time.
It would be interesting to tag a few to see what they do over winter, whether they die off or do they stick it out and remain around in a daze.

I would say they would prob move on to warmer waters as they prefer the water not too cold. To be honest there is not too much info about them in our waters. Saying that it use to be thought bass moved to warmer waters but it is now seen that they move away from shore into deeper parts but dont go too far! I do agree though, tagging would be good!

Sorry guys, i had to pull my entry because i couldn't get a weight for the fish. I don't keep scales with me and i always try to keep as much of the fish in the food chain by gutting it and scaling it in the water, so the powers that be said i couldn't have it. It is a shame because Old Man Dave sent me a Length-weight conversion chart last year which i measure up my july bass with and even though i only used the conversion for the bass that was apparently fine for the entry :confused:

At least i still have my video

There is an active trigger tagging program here in Wales, UK Triggerfish Project
I am unsure of any returns but people are tagging them through out the summer mainly around the Gower.
We also have huge aggregations of triggers in October (over a thousand individuals) at a few spots. This is thought to be prior to migration to .... wherever they go!!

Thats good to know they are tagging them. I just got my fish field guide thru the post too which gives some usefull infomation about them also saying the tend to migrate.

Si we updated the FOM rules and I put a copy of the new rules in the August FOM thread aswell as in the FOM announcment on each thread.

I also asked everyone to read rules 1- 7 which are the important ones :)

Thats a good video gutshot, nice fish too.

since the fom is a vote 'thing' would it not be possible to amend the rules to allow measured length of fish? probably most people would prefer to gut the fish at the sea.
Also, could the rules be adjusted to allow other means of date id? i've read several times of people not having a newspaper.
just a couple of suggestions offered with genuine respect to you guys who put in the hard work of making the fom happen for us all :)

No disrespect to your opinion Johnny but I like the rules as they are. I might be a bit pedantic, but if I was to suggest a change it would be to require both weight and measured lengthrofl.
What do other people think?

I like the rules as they are too (not too complicated). In terms of measurement, I think you need one or the other, and my personal preference is for the traditional method of weight (surely everyone knows where they stand with weight?).

Heres rules 1 - 7 in case anyone missed them

Entry

1. You must have posted a report of your catch including details of its weight and with a clear photograph, on the DeeperBlue forums.
2. A picture, with a daily newspaper in the background, must accompany the entry to prove date of capture.
3 Accurate scales must have been used to weigh your entered catch and DB staff may request proof of this.
4. All entries must be in by 23:59hrs GMT on 2nd of following month. (e.g. April entries to be in by 2nd May)
5. You may post your own entry on the appropriate FOM monthly thread.
6. Staff reserve the right to modify or even reject and delete entries that do not comply with the rules.
7. All weights must be entered in Pounds and Ounces



Basically weigh it, put it next to a newspaper and take a clear photo :)
