Winks and I went out today, to be met only by < 3 foot vis.... Sucked. Fortunately we weren't cold, except for my feet because im using 1.5mil socks... cold. The forums have been a bit slow lately so I figured we could talk about fish, whats your favorite, and favorite way to prepare it. Here goes!
I will rank fish on a Scale of 1-4. 4 Being very good taste, and 1 being something you wouldnt eat if you had to.
Crappie: (4) These are simply the best tasting fish available around here. We generally avoid eating them during summer because their meat goes "soft" and gets a fishy taste.
Bluegill: (3) The good thing about bluegills is that they dont go "soft". They do however have that slightly fishy taste all year, but its not that bad.
Perch: (3) Slightly better than bluegill I find. Same small trace of fishy taste.
Carp: (1) For obvious reasons. Carp have mushy flesh, and taste, well like... the stuff they eat. Crap.
Suckers: (2) Its not bluegill or perch, but suckers caught in clean water around here make good fish fry. Average taste.
Rockbass: (2) I think this is an underrated fish. Lots of people claim its bad. Hard to tell the difference between it, bluegill, and sucker in my mind though.
War Mouth: (2) Pretty much the same as rockbass, maybe a little better.
Bullhead: (2) Might just be my family, but we like eating bullheads and catfish. Tough skin, and obviously watch out for the barbells, but if left in buttermilk overnight, and then cooked like lobester tails in garlic, butter, and pepper, taste pretty darn good.
Lets see where everything ranks with you, if there are local species you have tried that we might not have easy access to, let us know and write about it. Recipes are always good aswell!
