Florida free divers

I was just wondering if anyone on here free dives in Destin Florida?

I saw another thread about people in Tampa, Sarasota, and Largo, but I'm 10 hours away from them. I'm about to start doing some training and it would be a lot better if I had a buddy. I just had shoulder surgery so I had to take a break.

I only got up to a 5:30 breath hold. Never did any pool training, but I've done some diving in the gulf, and I've been up to Morrison Springs.

I will look you up next time I am in Destin. I mostly dive in Los Angeles but have family in Destin, so I always go down to visit and spearfish off the coast. I have met a few freedivers (spearos) out there but it seems like most guys who hunt offshore depths are primarily into scuba... I'd love to have a dive buddy next time I am out since when I go out on my folks' boat they are hook and line fishing and I am always the only diver in the water. I have never dove any Florida springs but would like to...

You might try looking up Destin Underwater Hunters on facebook. I went out with Dean for a day. He was great guy. I am not sure if he does any pool training but that would be a good place to start.

We have Morrison Springs which is the closest at about an hour and a half away. I wouldn't mind traveling 3-5 hours to go to the many other springs in northern Florida if I have someone to go with. I'll probably be getting a kayak next summer to go to the closer wrecks and dive those, but I know there are some great wrecks at about 60-70 ft deep 7-10 miles off the coast, that one would need a boat to get to.

Yeah I'll look him up, and hopefully he does pool training weekly that I can go to and pick up some tips and better my dive time overall. I would like to be able to be down at least 2.5 minutes by the end of summer, which shouldn't be hard for me at all

Yeah, I'd love to dive those wrecks. I am mostly on a 80-110' bottom when I go out with my dad and while it is fun to do some deeper dives there is not much topography since he is H&L fishing and doesn't really care what's on the bottom as long as there are fish... In California when you talk about structure there are little caves, kelp forests, boulders, etc, but out there a bump on the bottom 16" high qualifies as 'reef'. As the locals say, 'spearing Destin is like driving through west Texas... whole lot of nothing and you can see all of it.'

Lots of training tips here; aggressive pool training is the best thing I know to increase bottom times quickly but be safe...
