the floats Tone, the floats... possible?

Hiya Simon, Funny you ask...If your talking about the floats I had proto'd a couple years ago...I am actually working out the details with a very well known boat manufacturer (clue they are local in Miami) to produce them for me...interior is 6# aircell 2 ply and fiberglass outer, very similiar to the one pictured above, but with a couple of tweeks:martial

LB I may be headed over 2morrow too hit me up if you wanna C-pool

LB I may be headed over 2morrow too hit me up if you wanna C-pool

gotta swing by work for a minute in the morning before Igo so I can't carpool, but I'll throw a few of those clips in a ziplock and bring them along so I can give 'em to you if we cross paths.

Ill pm you my cell

We'll be starting the bags this week. To answer a few questions on methods we use to make them as well the actual materials I took a few pix of the "work in process".

The first couple of pix are the type of double stitch we use, also known as flip-side double stitching (as opposed to single double stiching which is done on the same side), this type stitching although a bit more time/material consuming, secures the panels much better (actually overkill). Note the breathable textiline material.

Third pic shows the flip-side stitching complete, fourth pic we're turning the bag outside-out ,for the baffle stitch, which is the "extreme load bearing" stitch, and this we do the entire length of the bag where all connecting panels meet. Aside from the added strength this final phase gives the bag a very clean finish...

the last pix show the brute strength of the bag

.

As per a few suggestions we'll be making the bags with two- 2" nylon web straps for backpack type carrying.

Keep in mind the main reasoning for production of this DiveBag is to keep all your Dive gear together in one place neatly divided...weight belt, float, floatline, long fins (up to 2 pairs), mask (plus spare), even your wetsuit all fit with room for misc. stuff.

Anyother questions/suggestions post'em here or PM me.

That sewing looks good - neet and tensions right :)
I used to be a sailmaker so forgive this suggestion if it seems a bit nerdish...
Do you have the option for triple-stich on your machine? i.e. zig-zag but with three stiches ber zig and per zag... if you use a straight stitch for the first run on the seem and a triple stitch for the second it'll be EVEN stronger and will spread the load of each seam over a wider area. maybe not necessary tho?
Anyway - the bag looks superb, well done!

Thx for the input Jonny:fridaythe f-f stitch kinda does that (spreads the load, but the main reason why we run it is due to the nature of the textiline) this fabric is a buitch to work with so the zig-zag was running havoc on the machine (and the nature of the spectra line-very slippery- was also causing some runs, the machine likes the straight stitch see we decided to please her:girlie), but truth is that the baffle stitch is what locks the deal on this bag, that I know of this is the only bag on the market of its type- both material and sewing-wise (did I just make up a new wordrofl) It takes us about 2 hours to put each (precut, throw in another 30min. to cut'em) bag t/g but the end product as you can see is fresh.
Thx again for the input.

UPDATE we'll start a new run mid next week we have 6 bags ordered anyone else interested send me a PM or heck hit me up direct settingsteel@yahoo.com. will be ironing out details on shipping to come up with a total cost.

UPDATE:

Just had question regarding the zipper the bag has (on the 2 outside pockets) they're YKK #10 Commercial Marine Zippers, on the first bag I proto'd I used a #8 which worked fine, but I liked the #10 better especially when wearing gloves. For comparison sake I snapped a pic of both (black zip is #10). Most commercial bags available are #4.

Currently have 9 bags ordered for next run which will be next week, so price is set at $90. anyone else interested let me know ASAP will be ordering material soon.

Dive'zilla Bag...final cut
Well here it is guys based on the various suggestions I made some changes on the bags and even got a name (kudos to my son:D).
This is the final product with (2) 2" straps, reinforced on both sides (inside & out). Basically the straps are X-triple stitched, then stitched again with a cover, giving it a nice finished look.
The bag will hold everything you would need to freedive (including 2 sets of fins, dive float, 2 masks, and 3mm, maybe even a 5mm 2 pc wetsuit, etc.)
Price for the bags is $110 includes shipping anywhere in the continental US (this price may change to $125 as a few LS may begin carrying them). Any forum members purchasing them from me will have a lifetime guarantee on the bag-replaced or repaired. In other words the last Dive Bag you'll ever own.period
Thx again to all

hell yeah tone... I am really happy for you and you are bringing a superior product to the people.... I hope these take off huge at the LDS's

no doubt, the truth is there is so much commercializing that is constantly be ing shoved down our throats, new logos, new products that we don't need, remade crap that doen't work as well as the old one and still costs more, it is a real bother...

so when a fellow spearo is able to put thought and first hand experience into the design of a QUALITY product, we all support it fully cos ultimatley we win..the more quality gear we have access to, the better our diving experieince will be.

Awesome bag man!!!! Possibly the only thing I would suggest, and I might have missed it, would be two adjustable, quick-release, straps on one side to hold a speargun. Other than that.....the perfect dive bag!!

good call, even just a bungee and ball rig for holding everything out of your hands

Hi Settingsteel

Just found this thread.

I agree with everyone that yours is an amazing bag!! I've been wanting to get a bag custom made for a while now and been working on something very similar (design stage only). It's based on a similar bag i already have (see pic [this is the bag i already have, i took the name out]). As you can see from the picture it has backpack style straps which is one of the things i really wanted cos some of the spots i go involve a bit of a hike, but i find that the ones on this bag are set far too high up the bag and the bottom edge bangs into the back of my leg almost behind the knee, which is really annoying. I end up walking with my hands behind my back to try and keep it off my legs. The build quality is, well, short term to put it nicely (though this is reflected in the price......if i lived near a supplier i could replace it every couple of months but the postage is twice the cost of the bag so thats no good). Both straps have now come away from the bag leaving a bit of a hole in the sides.

I also wanted something that has gun attachments on the sides, which this bag has but i don't use them. The reason being that living in the UK most people are not used to seeing anything with a GUN handle on it and it would probably cause panic in the oldies (i live in an area notorious for 'grockles'). I also dont think it's ideal to put the weight of the gun on the spear in a pocket. I would much prefer to have a handle size pocket on each side (near the bottom) with a flap that closed over the handle and a velcro strip (like on the bag in the pic.) nearer the top to keep the barrel secure.

I do think that the mesh is a really good idea but i think i would change the design slightly to suit me. It would need to be the orange stuff on the back panel coming round underneath the bottom and up the front about 6 inches. i would have to do this otherwise after a dive i would get a soaking wet bum/legs on the walk back (which i do get at the moment quite badly as the bag i have is not waterproof, but probably not quite as much as if the bag seat was mesh). Still having the mesh on the top 3/4 of the front means i could lay the bag down and it would still drain very easily.

anyway, i've attached a pdf of my (very basic) design for you to have a look at. Do you have a quote for postage to the UK yet? Is it feasible to do a bag with the elements i'd like to incorporate?

once again, top bag.

Chris

hiya Chris, and welcome to DB:friday

Thx for the kind words, I actually had a while back ago proto'd a bag with "gun sleeves" but unded up using it separately (that is- detaches from bag.) Lately we have been thowing around a "gun case" idea.

The design you sent me is nice and we can surely make it (with some alterations, but the best case scenario is to make runs in an absolute min. of 5, as for quality control to be maintained we need first to design a pattern...and the magic 5 is enough for us to proceed, I have had a few spearo's pm about a sleeve bag (similiar to yours), but really not enough to warrant we produce them.

As for us making the bag you sketched I will send you a pm with spec's.
