I haven't tried the power lung yet, a couple of people I know got lung infection from it, but I was wondering if it would be the same if you put couple of fingers over your mouth and breath in and out?

I also breath through my nose, a couple of hard inhales, when I run. To me it's a lot harder to breath this way.

Any thoughts on getting the same results without using the device?

Thanks!

I found that if I ran and only breathed through my nose and focus on using the diaphram to breath that by the end of a 20min run there was a real burn in that area, which persisted for a few days after. So if you haven't done much diaphramic trainning it may be quite a reasonable method, because if you only use your nose and diaphram, when the demand goes up the diaphram will have to work harder to met the needs. Though if it can't keep up, which it may not at the start, you'll get the benefit of lactic trainning aswell ;-)

Another method, lie on your back place around 1Kg just below you ribs and breath through your nose, once again only use your diaphram. This will lift the mass up and down (on the exhale, control it don't just release it) and will proved an adiquate work out once you find the right mass needed to provied an adiquate resistance.

As with everything work with your body

I breath through a straw rather than put fingers over my mouth to increase breath's resistance. I think it's just more confortable. A physical educator told me that this is propably the best way he knows to increase the strength of diaphragm. Don't use a straw with large diameter designed for fast consumption.
