I just wanted to post a quick “Thank You!” to all the DeeperBlue folks who showed up and made this such a fun and educational event. Special thanks go out to Scott and Chris for all the safety and technique pointers and especially for the “buddy rescue” demo they gave to some of us rookies. I also want to thank Scott and Chris for letting me borrow all the gear I needed to dive in style all weekend long. As a first-time freediver, I found all of the tips very helpful and was able to reach a PB of 30’ and on the last day was able to dive without ear-clearing being my limiting factor. Besides the specific pointers given to me, I probably learned just as much about technique and safety just from watching the more advanced divers do their thing. I also had a great time diving with the other “beginners”. It was a good balance between watching the experienced guys dive, and then trying stuff out with the rookies in shallower water.

Other highlights: Ted’s crappie fish fry, side-splitting fireside banter, “spearfishing” with Steve and Reason, a quick scuba dive with Vladis and Reason, and getting to learn about and try out MANY different kinds of wetsuits, fins, masks, spearguns, Hawaiian slings, dive computers.

The disappointing part: I just spent 6 weeks and $600 (not to mention the gear I bought) getting scuba certified this spring, and now I think I may prefer freediving.

Now I just need to find some freediving/spearfishing buddies in the Twin Cities area!
Thanks again. I had a great time!

Randy, it was good meeting you. Also good to meet Reason and his wife Judi (I think I misspelled her name with a y before. I saw a pic of Jeremy's new shoes with here name on them), SlimSteve Waterhawk and kevincook.

Some of those forest shots are pretty schnazzy, scott. Law enforcement officers don't usually strike me at the left-brained type.

Duck, it's my understanding that the lunocet was loaned to us on the condition that we do not make any public statements of opinion or performance. I think we can discuss the mechanics and design (again, as long as it doesn't pertain to opinion or performance). What I can say is that we were all grateful for the opportunity to try out such a myriad of high-priced, high-profile gear.

Then I think mechanics and design won't allow human to breach. Maybe it's just me and my swimming but I don't think there is evidence of anyone being able to breach with this fin yet.

And yes, it was great to try this fin. One thing for sure, it's very comfortable, looks great too.

Thanks Ted

Heres the qualifier for Lunocet comments - Thats the old lunocet - the one we tested in the bahamas and that I wrote a review of. I just want to make sure we're being fare.
Since the article Ted Ciamillo has made pretty much all the changes we recommended - Heres a list:

  • Moved blade toward the toes and up a bit relative to the foot. (this is the big one)
  • Reduced Buoyancy
  • Eliminated outward cant of feet/knees

In theory those changes should go a long way toward really improving the fin - I've not tested the new one - but I just want to make sure its understood that the comments in this thread pertain to the old one.

Hopefully FREEDOM 2010 will bring the chance to try the new, improved model.
Until then we'll work our muscles hard and then we breach

Too bad You couldn't make it Chris, it was good event after all

Alas, well, at least I was there in fin.

Pete, for a guy with "no stress", you certainly like intense music. Are you singing Rage Against the Machine to yourself while you shoot panfish?!? Seems a bit excessive. Remind me to stay away from you when you finally get a gun

Scott, "Body Movin" give me a siezure if I listen for more than 30 seconds.
