Freedive-A-Palooza 2010 July 16,17 & 18th

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Summertime is "3mm time" in Wisconsin for almost all inland lakes. A hood isn't necessary, unless you are dropping below the thermocline. You could get by with a shorty 3mm for a while, but eventually you'll be shivering while the guy in the full suit is still comfortable.

I have been using the top of my 5 mill with rash guard bottoms. It is about right at Black Hawk lake, but the shallower lakes by Oxford are a little warm, and require me letting in a little coolant from time to time. I do not have a hood on my 3 mil which is why I have stayed with the 5 mil as the deer flies are biting and they love my wet head :(

I have ordered a 3 mil two piece camo suit today, but it will take a few weeks to arrive.

Temp vis report. Yesterday I took along a thermometer to calibrate may watch with. It was 77/78 most of the time. The visibility was better than last week, but it varied considerably from one side of the lake to the other.

The largest Crappie I got was 10 1/2 inches.

I saw the biggest carp of my life. Far more than I wanted to tackle with my gun attached to me. It could have been an interesting ride. I also had an encounter with a snapper which sent us both swimming at top speed. I was weaving through the weeds and stopped to see where I was. My fin slid under the snapper and the water came to life. We both took off in the same direction.... it was an interesting sprint with his big head right next too me.

Thanks for the temp report. I still only have a 5 ml henderson one piece but it allows a lot of flushing. I am not on facebook and don't know if there has been talk about the weekend there. Does anyone have a preliminary head count?

I got tired of not being able to find a dive partner so this weekend I went and posted a laminated sign down at the local pond that the fire dept and other divers go to from time to time. Hopefully I'll have a little luck.

Well DannyK sounds like you had as close to a shark encounter as you can while diving the mid west with that snapper of yours. Its good to have the heart pump like that once in a while just to keep things exciting.

NOT counting (spouses, Girlfriends or other Family Members) My rough number is about 10 divers. That "I" know of. and Like Always, Spouses, GF and other Family Members are welcome. With everyone that I think said they "Might" make it and those who said they were and counting their "Friends" I have a number close to 22

I'll try to join the fun on Friday and Saturday (if they'll let me take a couple of days of, that is) :)

Hello everyone
Is anyone thinking of bringing a boat so we can dive other areas of the lake? I will be happy to chip in significantly for gas.

Dive deep, hold long, and return safe!

I know Randy had mentioned POSSIBLY bringing his Sailboat, but I'm not sure if that is still something he wants to do. Not sure if Tass is coming, but he has a boat also. Wreckrunner has a boat, but it may be stationed on Lake Michigan. And I'm not sure if he is coming.

A boat would be nice to help keep the fishermen away some. There will be a lot of other boats on the water, but it is a no wake lake, so they are mostly fishing. The deepest part is out from the beach, or the boat landing. By the under water bridge is the deepest part of all. It is across the lake though. I will have my diveyak on Saturday, at least that is my plan for now. I suppose we could all hang on around it and drink tea and eat crumpets :)

I have a dive kayak as well. Maybe we could just swim them over and use them as platforms to store all of our toys/gear/lunch on. They would also be helpful in keeping the other boats away.

Jon

what a sight it will be

[FONT=&quot]Excellenta! I can see it now, each kayak towing 4 or 5 divers skiing on their fins, spearguns slung across their back like anticarp mercenaries on a covert missions to secure the lake making it safe for the woman and children! Bubble on dudes! (sorta like the marines hoora but only for free divers)

I live your tag line Jon

As always, I don't know what days I will be working as I am full-time at McCoy right now. If I get time I will definately get out. My boat will be with me if I make it.

Scott is there any schedule of events? It looks like can only come for Saturday. I don't want to get there too much before you all crawl out of your tents :)

There is no SCHEDULE- I'd say in the past we generally are going in the water round 9-10am get out round lunch time then back in till bout supper. Then possibly a night dive, for those who are not afraid of the dark. I'm sure I will be up round 8ish if not sooner.

Also, for those planning on camping on the GROUP site: don't tell you're camping when you first get there. Come to the site and we will figure out if you need to use a tent or I plan on bringing my HUGE tent for those of you that are coming SOLO. They said there is a 6 tent/24 person per GROUP Site, I'm not sure how much they regulate that. But if there is 4 guys that are solo, might as well just use one tent and get to know each other a little bit more ;-) lol. I myself, will be sleeping in my Girlfriend's tent.

Also, the other reason to not say if your camping, Not sure if they plan on charging you to CAMP, I already paid for the Campsite for 2 nights- no reason they should be able to double charge ppl.

My GF is not a diver, so if any of you guys have a "spouse" or friend that wants to come but doesn't dive. They won't be stuck at the campsite-alone. She isn't really planning on getting in the water too much. She may check it out, just to see what all the hype is about.

I am going to shoot to be there at noon-ish. If I'm not there and you beat me to the campsite- G11. I should be there shortly.

Also, there are other things to do at this campground when we are not in the water. I will be bringing "Corn Hole" aka "Bean Bag toss" - there may be a tourney, we'll see. Not to mention a Playground, Volleyball court, Mini Golf, Ring-Around-The-Rosey, ect.... Looks like for now, we will have decent weather, but I've learned in the past week, to not trust the weather men- They are Lying, White Trash!!!! :)

Word to your mom.

If any of you are counting on using your cellphones.......cell phone use is useless at the park. At least with my phone. I can call just after I leave the park and come up on to the high land again.

Look forward to meeting many of you tomorrow.

For the most part- I had a good time. The Vis in the water wasn't the greatest due to the rain we had been getting. I think 10' in best spot- I saw. but 6' for the most part. There were a LOT of fish. Had we had more vis- there would of been more dead fish. Never found the underwater bridge- but there were some interesting rock formations. It's a good spearfishing lake, a good campground. I got to meet a lot of the newer Divers- Would go spearfishing with any of them. Pretty decent group. Had some fun at the campsite too, got my but whooped in a couple games of "Corn hole" aka "Bean Bag Toss"..........By a GIRL! lol. Had some good conversations and interesting stories to share.

I think in the future we need to plan the Palooza earlier in the year. Seems that mid to late July produces crappy lake conditions for the most part.

17 people showed up to this years palooza- it was great having you!

What about the rest of you wahoos...any photos? Any fish? How were the skeeters?

Pics in the future

I have only one or two pics of the carp I will try to get them posted but it will be a while. I had to get a new used laptop and have not had time to do anything with it as I have not had a single day off since the dive to get it set up. hopefully Valadis will get his pics posted soon.

I have some pictures i have yet to post from the palooza on my disposable cameras. The cameras still have about 20 some pictures left so i'm waiting until i can fill it up before developing, unfortunately the lakes are miserable right now so i cant get any good pictures.
