Freedive Cheaters?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
what i am a little curoius about is that in an earlier post Jorg you say you know these answers from first hand experiences, have you enlightened AIDA about this person or persons so that something can be done about it?
When I first heard about the rumors of doping in the sport it were always people who were saying stuff about others, that was around 2005 I think. And at that point I just started asking at the people who were accused about using, if it were true. Of course everybody said no and laughed it away, except one person.

He would tell me more, if I wouldn't reveal his name. And I promised I wouldn't reveal my source, because the story behind it was much more interesting then who was using. After that I did a lot of research and even wrote a pretty big article I never published (maybe some day, if people are ready to listen)

However there is another person who I can name if you would like, who did some world record performances while on beta blockers. Fortunately he did it only during training. If you people are really interested in names... But be honest, do you really want to have the names? Or do you want the stories behind it?

Shouldn't doping controls catch the people who are using it? And if that system fails, isn't it better to learn from the people who are willing to talk, instead of hanging them at a tree?

unfortunately i would agree with Eric and Jorg, not for any specific information but more because doping is a particularly easy way to get results without having to train as hard.
DD

Dane I think you are under the impression that people who dope, or use performance enhancing drugs don't train as hard as the next guy who doesn't? From what I've seen, especially in body building it's quite the opposite, they take the drugs so they can train harder and longer to get them the results. Now don't think I'm condoning cheating, I hate it with a passion, especially since I used to cycle competitively and cycling is considered THE DIRTIEST sport around. But it's not a case of the guy sitting on his arse and taking a shot of epo or what ever it is and all of a sudden vioala he's a super athlete. I don't know the in's and out's of beta blockers but I could see how they could allow one to be lazy and get a performance increase in freediving, however I doubt anyone who is serious about results thinks that they can be a couch potato and cheat the system with doping to achieve those results.

Everybody is talking about beta blockers... so what are they exactly? I looked it up on Wikipedia... but what are they exactly, pills, shots? Does one go to a pharmacy and ask for a beta blocker? Or is it something that your family doctor can prescribe? How much do they cost? (since somebody was saying it costs 30,000 Eur a year to dope...)

I mean, if it's something that is easily accessible, not expensive, with immediate effect and that leaves almost no trace in the current antidoping tests, and that can be easily taken prior or during a competition, then the next queston is:

What is the meaning of records in static?

Jorg

thanks for clearing that up, dont want you breakingyour word, i was just curious if you add discussed this directly with AIDA to say yes i have proof that people are cheating and this is how they are doing it so that we can learn from this and help prevent it from happening again, whether this be nameand shame or by improving the testing and judging to help make it much more difficult. (i'd prefer the later)

Newbie spearo not saying that it allows you to be slack just allows greater gains from similar training times etc. i used to train very heavily in martial arts and one of my partners was using some borderline legal but not really drugs and we could train equally and his gains were remarkable, what i'm saying is i'd have to train substantially harder to gain the same results. i'munder no illusion that i could sit around drinking beer and partying then wake up one morning take an assortment of drugs and then pull out a 200m dynamic (alot better than my current perfromance) but i guarentee that if i was using now with myn current training i would be diving substantially better than i am without. (health risks aside)

and that is my issue amongst other things

Look, i'm but a mere beginning freediver but i cycle in competition as my 'first'
sport.

Trust me, you do NOT want to draw the drugs issue openly into your sport.

Cycling has virtually imploded through accusation and often without evidence.

What this does is detract from those efforts made by pefectly legal means
whilst in the eye's of the public, sponsors and future competitors, it draws
a dark shroud of doubt around the whole thing.

Yes, drug test, but start from scratch.
Just make it clear that from X date forward, these rules will be enforced etc.
Do not, for the sake of freediving as a sport start destroying the sport from within.

There will be enough outsiders left to do that job if this continues.

Just my opinion.

Beta blockers have many uses, mostly around reducing stress and lowering heart rate and stroke volume. They used to be prescribed commonly to deal with people with high blood pressure, and have (at least in the past, not sure about now) been taken by surgeons to reduce stress and shaking hands during procedures. They're also used during heart surgery to reduce the strain on the heart. As you can imagine, they would be quite beneficial.

Beta blockers come in many forms, from IV to pills. They range in potency and half life, so some would be good for freediving and others wouldn't be. If you, or a friend, were prescribed the correct type, they would cost $3 here in NZ for a 90-day course.
